"Ginny?"
It was 2am in the morning. Harry thought he was the only one down in the common room this early. That was before he heard someone sniffing. He looked over towards the couch and saw Ginny sat there crying.
"What's wrong?" he asked, at her side in a flash. He felt stupid for asking that question as soon as it was out. He sat down beside her. She was desperately trying to wipe her tears away. He held onto her hands, forcing her to look at him.
"I know that you're upset," he said. "I know what it's like to lose a loved one. It isn't easy but hiding is going to help." Ginny looked up at him with that blazing look in her eyes she had before they had kissed for the first time. Gently, he pulled her closer. She snuggled closer to him. He sighed quietly.
They stayed like that for some time. He had thought that Ginny had fallen asleep but then she spoke.
"Why does there have to be a dark side to happy endings?"
"All things happen for a reason. I learnt that the hard way. I wish Fred didn't die, as well. He was like a brother to me." A single tear fell from Harry's eye. Ginny sat up and turned to face him. She wiped his tears away.
"I thought that my world had come to an end when I saw lying there in Hagrid's arms," she whispered. "It was like all I knew was suddenly crashing around me and I couldn't think anymore or breathe or move.
"And then you disappeared. I didn't understand until you pulled your cloak off. I thought I felt my heart burst into fire when I saw you alive again. I wanted to run towards you and just hold you but then I realized that the end still had to come. But you defeated him. You defeated Voldemort and saved us all."
For a few seconds they stared at one another as though they had not seen each other in centuries. Then very slowly Harry took her face in both hands and kissed her softly on the lips.
"I love you," he whispered placing his forehead against hers, breathing her scent in. he closed his eyes. It was the first time he had ever said those three words to her but they were true. Spending the last several months away from her helped him come to realize that he meant every word. He loved her and couldn't imagine his life without her.
"I love you, too," Ginny whispered. All was well.
