Requiem for a Dream

He sat there, in the corner of the darkened room, his feet pulled up against his thumping chest. He rocked back and forth, his head hitting the hard wood behind him. His body shook in fear - they were coming, he could hear them.

Thump, thump.

Footsteps, footsteps.

They were here.

He drew in his breath, slamming his face into his knees. Tears were coming, he could feel them too. Soft, transparent tears falling down his face and soaking his face. A cry came forth from the mouth, a cry of a scared animal.

Thump, thump.

Footsteps, footsteps.
They were here.

He had awoken from a dream, a frightening dream, filled with moments from his past. Terrible, horrible moments that he had been trying to forget.

But forgetting was impossible when they were coming to get you.

Thump, thump.

Footsteps, footsteps.

He rocked faster now. The sound of his body hitting the wood grew louder and mingled with the fall of feet coming in the hallway. He couldn't tell what was what, and his mind grew dull as pain speed throughout his body and tears fell harder.

Thump, thump.

Footsteps, footsteps.

Suddenly, the footsteps stopped.

They were here.

There was a loud 'click' as the door opened quietly.

They were here.
He stopped moving, the sound of his heartbeat growing in his ears. He shut his eyes, squeezing them so tight that they hurt. Consumed by darkness, he strained to hear for any sound of the intruder in his room.

"Draco."

They were here.

He jumped at the sound of his name, throwing himself onto his back and opening his eyes to moonlight darkness. He concentrated on the ceiling, daring himself not to look anywhere else. His breathing quickened, and he gripped his thin wand in his hand.

"Draco, darling, what's the matter?"

They were here.

He recognized the voice, somewhere deep inside the recesses of his troubled mind. The voice of a woman whom loved him, who had given birth to him, who had wanted nothing bad to ever happened to him. But then...then she had given him to You - Know - Who...and the pain...and the torture...

They were here.

He tried to remember the name of the woman who loved him. It was there, somewhere, in the hazy recesses of his dream.

"...Mother?"

Mother. Mother? What was a mother?

They were here.

He screamed, gripping the wand tightly in his hands. The memories pained him like a dream, a hazy dream, and his screaming grew louder.

"Crucio! Crucio!"

They were here.

"Draco! Draco, stop it!"

He kicked out, not feeling anything but air. They were here. They were back for him, just like they'd said. But he wouldn't let them win. He wouldn't. He grabbed for his wand, holding it, not sure in which direction it was pointing.
"Avada Kedvra!"

There was a flash of green light that illuminated the room. Draco shut his eyes, feeling himself slip away. Suddenly, the green light stopped.

There was an eerie silence that followed.

Fin.
