Our Unwound Future

You pulled a promise from a hat,

One I've kept throughout the years,

Even when no one kept track,

When all that was left of you was my tears.

You worked in the future,

While I worked in the past;

Both of us unearthed time,

But yours came by too fast.

You had no magic wand,

Yet your magic gained my heart,

And then your flaming lab

Tore my heart apart.

Your calling lied in science

It all flew past my head,

But I know you built a time machine

That left you and your partner dead.

I thought that you were lost,

That our future was unwound

And then I moved on,

Your memories were pushed down.

I've gone on to teach

For ten years since your death

And now you've reappeared

Yet our time's cut short again.

Oh, Claire, how things should have been,

There is no gentlemanly way of putting it,

And I'm not one for saying such things

But it seems so clear to me:

Oh, Claire, it was time itself

The grand puzzle that you solved

That worked to create

Our unwound future;

Oh, Claire, it's so unfair

I can't, I won't, and yet

You make me the gentleman I am,

And so we must accept our unwound future…
