Summary: A lifetime of Regret in a single moment.
She had once said, when she thought that she was dieing, that she had no regrets. Then he had said that he would regret dieing. So much had happen since that day, and now she had regrets, most of which revolved around him. Many amazing things had happened in her life, the majority she had been at the cutting edge and hip deep in world altering events, and so many of them tinged with regret.
For ten amazing years, she had worked out of Cheyenne Mountain, seeing wonders that most people would never believe and fighting monsters that would haunt the nightmares of the populus, and she had done it with her team, her family by her side. But she could never be with him, the man who had stolen her heart ever since she had arrogantly offered to arm wrestle him. Damn regulations. Slowly he had faded out of the team, taking over control of the base instead, but still always there for her. Always out of reach.
With the work of numerous people, him and herself included, the had seen the world transform form a patchwork of nations bent on destroying each other to a single, coherent world under the control of a central government that truly represented all the people of the world. She regretted that he never got to know the recognition that he had gotten, that they had all gotten, from the people of the world. He had died before all that they had achieved over the long years had been revealed to an appreciative public, and to add insult to the injury of his loss, one day after his death a medical breakthrough was unveiled that used genetic manipulation to retard the ageing process, eliminate cancer and extend the human lifespan to 300 years.
When the woman that her family considered a daughter, an alien to the world, was elected as head of the world government, she felt pride beyond belief, but also regret that she never had any children of her own. She had never been in a relationship since his death. She had seen the world grow strong enough to defend itself on the galactic scene. She had seen fleets of ships, both warships and commercial vessels, built and launched into the black of space. She had seen as many wonders from the bridge of her ship as she had with her team over a hundred years ago, and he had missed them all.
Now that she was dieing, wounded and alone on her crippled ship, the one thing that she regretted more than anything is that he had missed so much of the ride. As she slipped away, she heard one of his smart ass comments and she realised that she was going home to him… no regrets.
The End
