La, la, la, la…

I'm wishing on a star, and trying to believe

That even though it's far, he'll find me Christmas Eve…

It was a dark night. The stars were just barely there, being covered by the mist of the December air. It was a chilly Christmas night, I'll tell you that. I wrapped myself tighter in my quilt as I lied down on my soft, comforting bed.

At the time, I knew that my parents were going to sneak down the stairs at any moment, setting up the presents under our Christmas tree for my younger siblings and I. I lived with my adopted eleven-year-old sister Nudge, who was hyper and loved the color pink. She had a motor mouth that could turn even Mother Teresa into an ax murderer. She still does.

My twin eight-year-old siblings were also very excited for the arrival of "Santa Claus". But I didn't believe. I had seen my father setting up the presents when I was about eight and was curious to see what Santa had left. But that was all in the past.

The only thing I had truly wanted, and still do, was to rid myself of the terrible memories that plagued my dreams every night. You see, I was kidnapped a few months after I was born. I was taken to the School where they grafted bird DNA with my human DNA, and I became a successful Human-Avian-Hybrid, along with other children. I remember all of the terrible experiments they made us do, whether it was being beat up by Erasers or running seemingly endless mazes, I still remember the only good thing that came out of being at the School.

And that was Max.

She was my best friend, the one who would always sooth me after being horribly tested on. I was a few months younger than her, but I cried more often. She never cried. Not once. She was like a mother, but, when I had thought about it more and more, I realized how beautiful she truly was, inside and out. She had long, wavy brown hair that had blond streaks in it and warm, chocolate colored brown eyes. She had small freckles dotting her cute, small nose and pink, full lips.

I wondered what she would look like, since we were both fourteen. My one true Christmas wish was to be able to see Maximum Ride again, though I highly doubted I would.

After having all of these thoughts re-run through my head, I had unknowingly drifted off to sleep.

I had woken up to the sound of rumbling throughout my room, all of my textbooks and model planes shaking from the force. I sat up, frantically looking around, awaiting my sisters' and parents' screams or calls. But they never made a sound.

And, strangely, I heard the whistling of a…train? I rushed up in a frenzy, grabbing my robe, but the pocket ripped and my marbles fell to the hard wooden floor, scattering around from the still rumbling ground.

I quickly rushed past our still empty Christmas tree, trying to head towards to source of the noise, the train whistle blowing yet again.

It was lightly snowing outside and when I was at my front yard, what I saw shocked me more than when I had found out that I had wings…
