Lexie Grey watched Derek Shepherd and Callie Torres in the hospital room with Mark Sloan and then she took a peek out in the hallway where her sister, Meredith Grey, her sister's mentor, Miranda Bailey, and their mentor, Richard Weber, were sitting down. She missed them; she missed all of them.
Her mother, Susan Grey, said that it couldn't be helped when she had come to get her own daughter. She had said you will miss them more than they miss you. She had said that when you check in on them, you'll wish that you were there with your loved ones for everything.
Lexie intended to say that very same thing to Mark once when his spirit separates from his body. That's when it happened.
"Lexie?" Mark said.
"Hi, Mark," she said with a sad smile.
"Am I?" Mark asked because he couldn't quite finish the question.
"Yes," she answered.
Mark turned to look at Derek and then looked over at Callie before he turned back to Lexie. "I don't want to leave," Mark told her.
Lexie walked to him. "I know," she said. "But we're no longer part of this world. I didn't want to leave my father, my sisters, their families, or you, Mark."
"Why did you?" he asked.
"Because I didn't belong in this world any longer," Lexie said. "I've missed you, Mark."
"What about Sophia?" Mark asked.
Lexie laid her hand on his shoulder. "She's in very good hands with Callie," she assured him and then sighed. "Someone told me when I had died that you will miss them more than they will miss you, but the thing is, Mark, they will join us one day. When they do, we will welcome them with open arms."
"Death is inevitable," Mark replied as he looked at his body.
Lexie gave him another sad smile. "Yes, but for now, Derek, Callie, Meredith, Arizona, Sophia, and the rest of our friends will go on with their lives until they join us," Lexie said. "Is that okay with you?"
Mark turned back to look at Derek, his best friend for untold number of years, and then flicked his gaze at Callie. He looked in the hall to see their friends. He felt himself letting go knowing what Lexie told him is true. "Yes," he said.
Lexie smiled as she offered her hand to him.
Mark took her and they slowly disappeared.
