Chapter One-The Beginning

Crying, I jumped out the window and ran, a newly formed scratch on my face gushing blood. Farther and father I ran until the shouts of my father and cries of my mother faded away. I slowed down and collapsed behind a pair of bright green bushes, exhausted. Exhausted from the yells and screams of fury, exhausted from my father's beatings and my mothers drinking. After I settled into a soft sniffling instead of the noisy crying, I started to look hesitantly at my surroundings. I was near a park with wide swings and a tall slide. The neighborhood wasn't much better than mine, garbage was still everywhere, but a river rushed by on one side and I heard birds singing over head. Their songs made me feel even worse. Why couldn't I be happy like those birds? Why couldn't I be free from the place I lived in? What had I done to deserve this?

Laughter pierced my thoughts. A shrill, but beautiful noise of happiness. I peeked over the bushes and saw two girls swinging on the swings. The eldest had a sharp, sour face and was glaring at the younger one, who was swinging higher and higher.

"Look, Tuney! Look what I can do," called the younger girl, her face turning to catch the light. With an angelic smile on her face and red hair billowing around her, the girl looked absolutely beautiful. Her soft, green eyes were focused on the other girl's face as she jumped from the swing which was at least ten feet from the ground.

I froze, petrified as the girl's body fell straight to the ground. I almost start to run forward, but stopped myself when at the last minute the girl began to float slowly down, landing with a slight thump on the ground. I stood stock still. Could this beautiful girl be a witch? My attention focused back on the sour faced girl, as the she began to screech.

"Lily, you promised mom and dad you wouldn't do that anymore," the girl screeched. "Its dangerous."

"But I always manage to catch myself," the other girl replied, in a soft smooth voice. "Its not very dangerous."

I smiled and unconsciously shifted my feet, making a large crack from the branch under my feet. Both girls whirled around.

"Whose there?" they demanded, one with a harsh command and the other with a soft question.

I froze for a minute, then ran back the way I had come, scared to face either of the girls at that moment. Behind me I heard them calling for me to come back, but I just kept running. I turned left then right and finally stopped at the door to an old house. Shackles were falling off the roof and the air reeked of alcohol and mold. Yelling could be heard from inside the house and I heard my name, Severus, screamed a couple of times. Home sweet home.

Sighing, I headed back to the broken window and climbed into the small hole that I always hid in during my parent's arguments. I tuned out the screams of my parents and smiled, thinking of the girl with the soft green eyes and angelic smile. Before I curled up and drifted into a deep sleep, I told myself I would see the girl again. Lily.
