He saw the way her blue eyes shined. Her eyes lazily drifting back and forth, they caught the sparkling light of the stars and the sea.

She saw the way his ebony hair curled with the wind, dancing and laughing. His fingers may have been clenched tightly together, but his smile spoke of another story.

"Do you ever wonder about what could have been?" He whispered. Silence carried a piece of his soul out to the ever propelling winds. His heart had long lost the steady rhythm it had been born with. He wondered how that question had slipped out of his unfiltered mouth. He knew, as well as she, that such questions only brought longing, suffering and embarrassment. But with her eyes reflecting the sea and oh, so open, before him, simply standing there but absorbing each wave and tide, he could no longer resist. The spirits knew that he himself had woken up too many nights each week wondering about his own twist in fate.

"Which mistake are you referring to?" She responded, a smile already playing on her lips. He chuckled and flashed her wide eyes. "I'm kidding love, you know me better than that." She glanced at him, and then back to the sea, giving her curls a contented little shake, letting the salty air swirl through them. The ethereal shine gifted from the moon shone on her face. She glowed, simply put, as her eyes fluttered and closed.

He refused to be distracted. But just as the moon pulls the sea out to her biding, so did her innocent magic. His fingers trembled in fear, his mind sniggered in amusement, and his heart continued beating out of his chest. He couldn't believe himself sometimes. He knew that she would be the first one to topple of the ship laughing, if she found out that he still got butterflies when he held her hand. Here he was, a married man, still scared to hold his wife's hand. His mouth curved crookedly to the left.

"Fireflakes, I was referring to our relationship. And your first love. And your brother- who for the first time managed to do something right," he drawled. His eyes lazily found hers and softened. It was hard to remember exactly what he was doing when he was around her. His mind grew hazy, numbing itself to everything except one emotion- joy.

"You talking about my Ben and Jerry's or my Ghirardelli? I'll let you know that I've had multiple relationships before you. You're going to have to be more specific than that."

He knew that he shouldn't love it when she teased him that way, or flick his temple that way, or muss up his hair that way. But he did.

Electricity could not compare to the feeling of she- she in his arms, she nestling into him, she wrestling him for the blankets, she snoring in his ear. Nothing could.

The night had grown old and dawn was breaking. Cracking the line between light and dark, the sun was prepared for its ascent. The world had not stirred; it had not thrown off the covers of darkness that the couple had wrapped themselves in so willingly. The wind was barely whispering, letting the ship to rock naturally. The sea simply glittered with the promise of a new day.

She looked at him now, tracing the contours of his face with the soft pad of her finger. Neither spoke of her question; but there was no tension coiled spring between them. This was a piece of their hearts, their easy banter, the rhetorical questions answered one too many times. He sighed, more than willing to just be at ease. Time still had not begun ticking; the world still in transition. The colors rippling across the sky unfolded slowly, not willing to come to an end.

She sighed against his jaw now. His head lolled to the side, only supported by his shoulder, as his hands supported his weight while he leaned back. Her nimble digits combed the flying strands away from his face. The wind had started running again, eager to usher in the light of a new day. Both gazed out to the emerging light; his hand finally meeting hers. Together they intertwined, a reminder of the day their love had been born from Sokka and a lack of Ben and Jerry's.
