"A new mission my lady?" he said as he walked to her desk.
"You had better sit down," she said with that Kiba's smile faded and was replaced with a look of worry.
"What's wrong?" his voice was calm but his eyes were filled with worry.
"Some thing has happened in Sunagakure, Kankuro was on an S ranked mission his team was just pronounced MIA" she said sombrely. "I know you were involved with him so I thought you should be the first to know." Kiba had to fight to keep from breaking down Kankuro, his Kankuro, was missing or worse dead.
He took a shaky breath "what happened to him?" he was trying to sound brave but all that came out was a breaking plead.
"I don't have the details if you want I could request them from Gaara," she said sympathetically.
He shook his head no. "I would rather go myself do you think I could have a few weeks off?"
"Of course you could leave immediately if you want," she replied.
"Thank you, then I will go now" he said as he walked to the door. After he was out the door Shizune came out from the shadows she had been in during the conversation.
"He was crying wasn't he?" she said voice thick with pity.
"He was, it's hard to hear that the one you loved is dead" Tsunade replied sadly.
Kiba ran home, not even stopping when he passed Akamaru, who had been listening outside the door during the conversation as the Hokage requested. Kiba kept running past Hinata who called out to him and Naruto who was yelling about something or another all the way to his apartment, the one he had needed when he started seeing Kankuro because it would have been uncomfortable to live with his lover and family. It was a small place with one bed room but it was comfortable for the two boys when Kankuro could come and see him. The place that was once a haven for Kiba when life without his love was too hard to face was now just a sick reminder of the uncertainty surrounding the location and life of the one who's sent never seemed to leave but instead chose to linger a constant reminder that he would be back.
Kiba entered the room and fell to the floor hiding his head unable to stand the sight of the place full of years of once sweet memories that now poisoned his mind with sorrow. Like if he were to look up to the sink he would see Kankuro standing there yelling about how Kiba had to at least try and keep the place clean in his absence. Or if his eyes were to wander up to the coffee maker he would see the puppet master without his war paint and two cups of coffee in hand saying good mourning mutt or something of the like.
The rest of Kiba's night was spent doing just that, remembering, the time they went to the festival one spring and Kiba had lost the ability to walk from the alcohol and Kankuro had carried him bridal stile all the way to their house. The time he was sick and bed ridden and Kankuro had stayed, much to Gaara's dismay, with him tending to him for over a month until he was healthy again. And then the worst one would come up, the day Kankuro saved his life and dragged his half dead self back to the village whispering words of love to keep him conscious. Finally after what seemed like hours, Kiba had cried himself dry and fallen in to a troubled slumber haunted with images of the man he loved bleeding and crying out for him.
