Hey guys, I'm sorry I haven't updated in a while, my computer crashed on me during the exam week and well yay for that. But I promise, I'll get back on track with my stories. In the mean time here's a nice little one-shot I did for one of my favorite couples in Pitch Perfect.
Donald was impressed. More than impressed as people around him screamed their love for the Bellas and the girls were smiling with joy, walking down the stairs of the stage and dispersing among the crowd.
He grinned as he watched the small asian bella walk towards him with her high heeled shoes. As soon as they ended their performance, Donald had gotten up on his feet and broke Bumper's first and most important rule: Don't, under any circumstances, clap.
Who cares anymore, Bumper had ditched them to go be a John Mayer back vocal. The hipster recalled how his best mate had smirked while telling them that he had won a lot of times already to care about the ICCA Finals, Donald wanted to punch him so bad if it weren't for the fact that he was in the bath tub along with half the Treblemakers. As soon as Bumper had closed the door, they knew that they had to find someone to take over the ex-leader or they were screwed. Thank god it was Jesse and Benji, he thought as Lilly was now in front of him, smiling shyly, her dark eyes sparkling.
"That…was something. I knew you guys had it in you." He complimented her as a grin threatened to take over his features. Lilly laughed and Donald felt a tug in his chest at her happy expression. People were screaming around them, still, and they had to either scream or scram just to hear each other.
So they chose the ladder and went to stand near the stairs of the stage, hiding behind the certain so they could block the noise as much as they could. Lilly turned her back to the curtain to look at him with the lights flickering behind him and some of them shining down at his face.
"You don't think it was too much?" Lilly asked and looked down at her clothes. They could pass as casual but that was her part, she mostly beatboxed so nothing extravagant was expected on her behalf. Donald ran his eyes along her curves, his eyes stopping at her waist or her slim legs, hiding a little blush.
"Are you kidding me? You know…now you are the official beatboxer of the Barden Bellas. And by the way….wow. You have improved so much I thought at first that you were using something like play back or some other shit like that." The boy grinned again as Lilly's eyes widened and she hit him on the shoulder with the hand that was holding her microphone and playfully glared at him.
"Do my eyes deceive me or I feel some jealousy on your part?" She shot back and her reward was the hung mouth of Donald. His eyebrows were raised as if daring her to say that again.
"Aca-xcuse me? You did not just question my skills missy. I'll have you know that since Bumper ditched us I had to rewrite all my raps and to see how Benji was supposed to sing his solo. God damn that guy, if he tries he can sing better that Bump ever did." Both his and her smiles were gone now.
Lilly remembered how angry they were for their leader ditching them, she knew they thought of him as part of the family and he threw it back in their faces. Fat Amy was so pissed off, she trashed his room and TP-ed it. Then walked out as the other Treblemaker's were laughing their asses off at the sight of all that Mexican food stuffed under his mattress and the posters of women giving a finger at his direction. She smiled up at Donald and tried to cheer him up, putting her small hand on his.
"Don't worry Donald, it's over. I'm sure he will be crawling back to you guys but it will be too late. " His lips twitched at her attempt. The hand thing worked too, she was just too adorable.
But Donald was a player. He didn't know how to handle such things. For God's sake, he even toyed around with Kori just to get her kicked out. They didn't have sex, she wanted it but he never gave it to her. He just toyed with her until morning and left her hanging, telling his fellow Trebles what he did and earned a pat on the back from Bumper. That was a low move, the olive skinned boy had to admit but what was done was done. Kori knew it was her fault for giving in and not taking the oath seriously. They had talked about it and made amends but Aubrey never forgave Kori for what she did.
But considering that Jesse and Beca were making out right now as they talked, even the ex-leader knew she had to call the ridiculous oath off.
Lilly was watching him think and let him have a few minutes for himself and then waved her pale hand in front of his face. Donald's eyes focused on her and he awkwardly scratched the back of his neck.
"Sorry about that…I was…just thinking." He looked at her apologetically and she smiled when their eyes locked. They stood for a few seconds, just staring at each other, getting unconsciously closer towards one another.
And the next thing happened so fast.
Some very eager group ran down the stairs and one of them pushed the curtain back to make more room. Causing Lilly to all but fly towards Donald. Crashing her soft and his plump lips together before the other had a chance to know what was going on.
Donald froze as he watched Lilly's eyes widen to the point where they were almost black, their lips still connected. He felt her body stiffen under his fingers, where he had caught her to prevent her from falling. What baffled him were two things:
One, her lips were so soft against his, he could taste the cherry lip gloss she had on and the mint she ate before her performance but there was something more to it. Something in the lines of vanilla, he concluded and decided that he very much liked the taste of her.
Two, she didn't pull away from him so it meant something.
Lilly…was shocked. Terrified to be exact. Her lips. Were on Donald's. Her lips. Her…lips…
While chanting that, her taste buds were set on finding the taste he gave her.
Cinnamon. Cinnamon and herbs. How, she did not know. Why, she did not care.
What she knew however was that she had to back away before Donald would come to the wrong conclusions. She didn't want to separate but she had to. Lilly backed away abruptly and startled Donald, whose hands had snaked their way around her waist and her tearing herself away from him was not what he wanted.
"I.."
"I don't…"
"I didn't mean to, I am so sorry!" She started to apologize frantically, waving her hands in front of her chest, her mind trying to come up with an excuse but having found nothing she just settled with darting her eyes at random things around her. Donald found her awkwardness amusing, not to mention cute. She was always cute but this time she just broke the cute-meter he mentally scored her on every time she was doing something near him. Now they were here, on the spot, trying to think of an excuse why both of them didn't back away as they should've.
"Calm down Lilly, jeez." He told her, but she refused to listen. Lilly was even more panicked now.
"But … But Donald… I don't know… Y-You…You just happened to be my first kiss."
And there went her secret, flying over the wall causing his eyes to widen after the words slipped from her mouth.
"You…Are you serious?" He was now a little panicked himself. Shit, shit, shit, he thought and ran his hands through his hear. He had just taken her first time kissing somebody even by mistake. What was there to expect? What now when he didn't even have a proper girlfriend until today. He had never asked a girl out like normal guys did, girls came to him not the other way around. He would leave them hanging, feeling the sense of control he had over the chicks. But this… Was she expecting something now? His mind was confused as fuck, trying to find his way through the thoughts that were rushing in. He did like Lilly, very much to be honest. She was different and not just the things she mumbled in her soft voice but she was…something unique. Lilly was the only person he was going to endure a lot of things for.
But he was a player. How could he change himself in a few minutes?
"Yes, yes I am." Lilly felt something in the pit of her stomach, a bad feeling.
That was it for Donald's brain, it just crashed. The little tube that was the connection between his brain and mouth was now missing and the first thing that he could come up with was worth a slap and the boy knew that. But it was too late to stop the words.
"How about we just…forget about this?"
Crash. Lilly's lips had formed a thin line, trying very hard to keep her composed face but inside her something cracked. She knew she liked Donald but none of this was what she wanted. None of it.
"…Did you hear yourself?" She quietly said, getting back to her old volume of speaking. Her hands hugged her frame slightly for support because the conversation was not going to be pleasant.
"Yeah, I did. You didn't want this, I didn't want this, you get me. Besides…this is not us right? You're the quiet Bella while I'm the Treble player. Nothing is going to work."
Shut up, shut up, SHUT UP! His brain screamed at him but his mouth couldn't stop. Oh, God…what have you done… Every word he uttered was like a slap and even he knew he deserved one for what he was saying. His eyes scanned her face while speaking and the shadow that casted her eyes did not go unannounced. Shit, his brain raged again, Do you even hear yourself you ass?! How can you stand yourself saying those things?
But Lilly was now furious.
"Are you serious?! You just…God, Aubrey had a reason for making us swear that oath. You guys are really jerks, no wonder she wanted to protect us from you!" Her voice was rising again, showing her temper.
"Oh please, you guys knew what we were! Don't forget it Onakurama, if all of us wanted, we could've had you girls in our beds by now. Even Stacie couldn't resist us and got close enough to get burned from me during the Riff-offs. " He shot back and knew he had her nailed. No words were even needed to express how she felt; everything was clear on her face.
Disgust, hatred, sadness…bitterness. Disappointment.
"And I thought… that what I felt for you was right." She had the last word as she calmly walked away from him, leaving him with a slightly open mouth.
From that moment Donald knew he screwed up big time with the asian beauty.
She was avoiding him on campus; her seat was always the furthest from his and closest to the door in class. While participating in the monthly Riff-offs she would stay away from him as far as possible and only sing as back vocals or beatbox but nothing more. Donald tried to provoke her many times, singing songs that he knew she could tackle but no, she wouldn't even open her mouth or glance his way.
He was getting desperate, walking around campus like an idiot, trying to find her or mark the places she would go. Lilly however was dead set on avoiding him and he had no other way to talk to her. Donald's ambitions had dropped tremendously. The desire to rule over girls…disappeared. Ladies came and went, flirting with him shamelessly only to go to their dorm rooms disappointed because his answer was a definite no every time. Sometimes Lilly's eyes would drift towards him and every time he was talking to a girl. She would glare their way, making the Bellas worry about her even more.
All of them knew what happened, partly because she was so mad her darts board had Donald's face on in. Her small whimpers and cries were heard every few nights and the girls couldn't take it anymore. They had cornered her and she had no other choice but to explain the sudden twist in her behavior. Fat Amy had offered her a shoulder to lie on as she talked about it while Stacie played with her darts as well. Beca was not happy with Donald playing around with her friends but Jesse had assured her that Donald was just as much of a drag as it can get. He was sulking too and all the girls knew it. They were just too angry at him to let him rest in peace.
This went on for weeks, her avoiding him, him trying everything to talk to her.
Donald was in his room, writing raps on random sheets of paper and afterwards scribing notes on other sheets when Unicycle ran into his room without knocking. He took the bed and bloped down looking through his phone.
"Shoes off Uni or they'll end up in the washing machine." He eyed his Nikes. " Yep, those babies you love so much." Uni immediately took his shoes off and just to be sure he put them under the bed.
"You know…" Uni started casually and Donald turned towards him with his tired eyes.
"Uni, I really don't want to be scolded from you, the guy who chanced Aubrey around and didn't have the guts to confess even though you knew that she was in love with you for four years. So just stop, close that mouth and if that's all, get out of my room." He deadpanned and turned to his music sheets again. A moment later they were ripped from his unsuspecting figures and a very pissed off Uni stood in front of him.
"Listen Donald. You are a great friend and I respect you for taking the lead when Bump was an ass that left us at the finals. But you need to understand that your womanizing ways are over, they were over the moment you understood that Lilly is under your skin. You get it? So be a man and respect your woman enough to admit that she owns you just as much as you own her. " Donald's eyebrows shot up and he stared at his friend as if he had a third eye.
"Are you for real? I don't OWN Lilly! Lilly isn't some chick i can play around with! She is a person, a person with feelings and attitude and as you can see…" he mumbled the last part, "she can whoop my ass if she wants…I swear to god, that girl is driving me nuts while just standing on her feet." His head slumped down and rested on his desk. Uni watched him for a while, wondering how to say it.
"You didn't think that about any of the other girls you involved yourself with. Start thinking about that." With that he left, taking his precious shoes with him and quietly closed the door behind him leaving Donald to think about what he just said.
The hipster later found out that Uni was right, as much as right as he would ever be. He thought about the girls he played, each and every one of them was still chasing after him. They were pathetic in his eyes.
But Lilly wasn't chasing him from the start till today.
He thought about Kori and the way she fell from him on the first night, how easy she was.
But Lilly was shy and sweet and would never let herself to be seduced so lowly.
He thought about what Unicycle said, about the way he thought when it came to girls. Lilly was the only answer to his questions. Donald shot up from his seat and ran out of his room, startling the other Trembles that were lounging in the living room of their club house.
"Hey Don, where are you going?" Yelled Jesse behind him while lowering the volume on the TV. The only answer he got was: "I'm going to get my girl back!" and that was all he needed to grin and continue to watch his movie with the other guys, all of them had relieved smiles on their faces as the door slammed.
Donald ran through campus towards the girl dorms, passing through crowds and bumping into innocent people. He got a few bruises but got to the building and rushed up the stairs to the second floor and down the hall to the end.
Stopping in front of the door, he paused to form some sort of thought in his brain. The pressure was killing him slowly but he knew that the girl behind the door was worth it. The doorknob twisted and he slowly entered the room.
There she was. Lilly was wearing a huge white apron, smudged with different colored stains and a brush was in her hand. She had her earphones on and The Killers were blasting through so she didn't even turn around to hear the door open, her hips moving slowly to the beat as the brush was working on her latest painting. She was mumbling the text under her nose so Donald had the chance to admire what she was doing, she wasn't talented only in math so it seemed, art was something she was good at too. His hands reached out and tugged the earphones from her ears. Lilly snapped back into reality and turned to see who wanted to talk to her so much.
"Hey why'd you-" She froze in the middle of the sentence as her eyes saw the familiar face of the Treble. Donald gulped and opened his mouth to explain before he got kicked out.
"Lils, please. Hear me out. I know that I'm trespassing in your room and I know I'm the last person you want to see but please, just let me finish." He once again said because Lilly was about to talk.
"Listen…I panicked. I completely panicked and I know what I said was so stupid that I really don't know why you didn't slap me the second I told you those words. I know I was a total ass and… I'm sure that right now the only thing you want is to throw me out but hear me as I say this:
Lilly… I think you're amazing. And not just the things you do, not just the things you say. You're different from others, you're the only one that didn't have to try to catch my eye, you had me the first time I saw you at auditions. Your soft voice hit all the notes and even though nobody could hear you I heard you. And it was beautiful. Something so natural and so pure such as you… I don't deserve it, a…guy like me," he looked down in disgust with himself, "so I panicked. I didn't want to hurt you, I never did. Someone like me who doesn't even have a decent girlfriend doesn't play with innocent girls, that's what I thought. I didn't know if I could change and hurt you in the process and I didn't want to take the risk of misleading you or end up hurting you more that I thought you could take. I'm so sorry Lils. My actions and words caused great pain and… I never got the chance to say that I love you." His eyes darted frantically around the room and his heart beat was faster than it had ever been. Being a senior, graduating from uni in only months, he knew the weight of the last three words. Life was going to be hard on him, a job, a steady income, a home he could call his own. But this was one of the few things he knew he would never regret. Lilly was standing still in front of him, too shocked from his little speech to say something.
Tears started to form in her eyes and her lips were trembling. She threw the paint brush in some corner of her room and forgot it completely as her arms wrapped themselves around his neck. Donald's shot up in response and he hugged her waist tightly, breathing shakily in her black silky hair. Her tears started to wet his shirt and cardigan but once again the boy didn't care, he had the girl he wanted in his arms.
"You idiot. You owe me big time, you have no idea how long I waited for those words." She loosened her grip and looked into his eyes with a large smile. Donald raised an amused eyebrow and moved closer to her.
"I'm so sorry Tiger Lilly. I shouldn't have. You're the one thing I would never want to hurt."
"Shut up and kiss me." She smirked and their lips met again, electricity shot and they enjoyed every second of it. They finally had a taste of what lingered in their memories for such a long time, the weeks they spent apart were agony for both of them. Moving in sync, their lips had a steady and slow rhythm and Lilly got on her tip toes to gain better access which he happily granted her. Donald smiled into the kiss and picked her up, earning a yelp from her and put her on the bed so she didn't have to stand on her toes for a long time. Lilly smiled and pulled him again to capture him in another kiss, he moaned onto her lips. It was one of the best moments in his life.
When they broke away her vanilla taste still lingered on his lips and he groaned at the loss.
"God, I love you Lilly."
"Okay, you deserve hearing this. I love you too Donald. I was angry at you, yes. But I was torn too because I saw the chance that was starting to affect you. When you didn't let it take over I was disappointed in you, that you would never change your ways. But you showed me that… It's possible. And that you gave it enough thought to know the way these words change people. So let me tell you this: I love you." She finished with a small smirk and he beamed at that.
Finally Donald had set things straight and had done the right thing, taking the risk and betting what he had for the girl he loved. He made the right choice.
"I don't think I'll ever get sick of hearing those words." He smirked and their make out session began.
He threw his hat in the air, this was his last day as a student and he was finally going to try and tackle the real world. While talking to his mother who was smiling warmly at him and his father next to her, hugging her from behind he felt hands being put on his eyes and grinned at the soft voice in his ear that whispered: Guess who?
"My love, who else has the nerve to do that?" He joked and turned around to grab her waist and twirl her in the air, the laughter of the Bellas behind them with Aubrey and Chloe in the center with their own graduation gowns.
It was graduation day, the day he, Bumper, Aubrey and Chloe were supposed to be the center of attention. After the ceremony the Trebles and Bellas had their final performance with the graduates and were now in small groups, talking to each other or with parents. Bumper was finally back and from that moment on the Trebles were very hard on him. He did everything they asked and apologized for his actions but stubbornness was what kept him all this time to say sorry to someone. Donald was the person he first apologized to and the hipster appreciated that fact. It was Bumper after all, he would never completely change. The next one was Fat Amy, who beat the shit out of him and then kissed him hard on the lips to make a point across. She got it far because they officially became a couple a day later. Now he was standing next to his parents, introducing his girlfriend with pride.
Lilly looked at him bashfully and proceeded to greet his parents warmly. She had captivated them with her speech and manners, her thoughts were always backed up and even in the worst situations she was prepared to give a plan to save the day, like the time he didn't know what to work, which impressed his strict parents and they openly approved of her with the kindness they showed her.
"Lils… I wanted to ask you something… I was offered a position in a large corporation that has a branch just outside of campus… And I know that you still have school here but I wanted to ask you…Will you move in with me? I really want us to start another chapter of our lives together and I will do anything to make this work. So…what do you say?" He looked at her sheepishly. A few months together and he still found it hard to ask her important things, she had that effect on him but he didn't mind. Donald took care of everything beforehand, he had phoned her parents who also adored him to ask for permission, asked the school if that was allowed in such a short notice and everything was set. The only thing he had to get was a yes from her.
"Yes, I'd love to Donald." She beamed at him and jumped in his arms in joy, hugging him tightly while her long legs kicked in the air. The graduate laughed and twirled her again, both too happy to find words.
That was not the last yes and ecstatic response she gave him when asked an important question.
Years from now, you could imagine her in a white dress and grinning Bellas and Trebles on either side of the altar. Fat Amy and Bumper would hold the rings while bickering like a normal wife and husband do after their first year of marriage and Jesse and Beca would laugh when Beca catches the bouquet.
