The first thing she thought when she woke was something very profound, something along the lines of "Ugggh…"
As consciousness slowly returned, however, she noted a soft pressure over her mouth. Rough stubble ticked her face, warm lips that tasted faintly of something sweet with just a hint of spice, tea, maybe, pressed against hers. Carefully, slowly, she opened her eyes.
She'd recognize that face anywhere, even with his coffee-brown eyes closed.
Rex. But why was Rex… kissing her?
Then, to her exasperation, he pulled away.
Damn it, Rex. She was just starting to enjoy that.
"Rex?" she asked, still groggy, trying to sit up.
"Hey," he said gently, "you're awake." He hurried back to her side. "Hey, hey, don't sit up, you're still injured…"
He was right. Sitting up wasn't going to work, but she settled for propping herself up on an elbow.
"Oof!" The wind was almost knocked out of her as the captain engulfed her in a tight embrace. "Ah… watch the ribs…"
"Sorry…" his hug loosened and eventually released, and there was a brief moment of silence before Rex took her free hand in both of his. "It's good to see you awake." His voice was softer and his eyes fixed firmly on the ground. "I should go tell the general." He stood, releasing her hand, and pulled away.
"Rex," she called after him, but he had already disappeared.
Rex had… kissed her. Did that mean… Rex liked her? And did she… like him back?
