Aang floated in the ice as his Avatar state faded. The young preteen's heart fluttered as the one thing keeping him alive started to fade. The cold seeped into him as the iceberg froze thicker. Air expanded and froze inside his lungs. The young airbender's heart stopped and his soul left him.
Somewhere in the south pole, an infant boy was born. Sokka entered the world with the four elements in his blood.
Four year old Sokka toddled across the snow, two year old Katara clutching his mitten covered hand. Katara stumbled slightly, but used her older brother as an anchor.
"S-ka? Go?"
Sokka ignored her as he led them towards the ocean, away from the village. They didn't get too far before they were scooped up by their father. Hakoda held his children, one in each arm.
"Where do you two think you're going?"
Sokka pointed out to the water.
"Boy in ice."
Hakoda sighed.
"Sokka, I've told you before, there is no boy in the ice. It's just a dream."
Sokka's face scrunched up as he was carried away from the ocean. The young boy let out a wail as he cried.
"No, no! Boy in ice! Boy in ice!"
Sokka flung his arms out, and the sea responded. Two small streams of water slithered through the air towards Hakoda and his children. The water danced around Sokka's fingers as the entire village stopped and stared.
"Water bender."
Hakoda put Sokka down and knelt down in front of him as he waved over Bato.
"Bato, would you go get Kya and my mother? And please watch over Katara for a little while."
Bato picked up Katara as he nodded, walking off. Kya and Kanna soon joined Hakoda in front of Sokka. Sokka stood there biting his lip nervously. Had he done something wrong? Was moving water bad?
Kya smiled at her son.
"Sokka, Bato says you can water bend. Would you show us?"
Sokka could tell that his mother was upset, maybe moving water would make her happier. The young child laid his hands out in front of him, palms up. He raised them slowly, and small clumps of snow around him lifted into the air. At this point, most of the village's adults had gathered around the child and watched in awe. Sokka held the snow in the air for a moment before letting it drop. The adults murmured amongst each other. A meeting needed to be held.
"We should write a letter to the Northern Water Tribe! Ask for a bender to come down and teach him!"
"No, that's too far away! Write to one of the closer water colonies!"
"You'd have a hard time finding them, the Fire Nation scattered them! And forget a letter, send the boy to the Northern tribe!"
"Sending such a young child away from his home?! Are you crazy?!"
"Forget all that, let the boy teach himself!"
The adults in the gathering tent yelled at each other, ideas turning into arguments. Nobody was sure what to do. Hakoda stood at the head of the table, fist clenched and teeth grinding. Bato, having grown up with Hakoda, saw the calm before the storm. Bato slammed his fist and shouted.
"Quiet!"
Everyone stilled and looked at him.
"Why don't we see what Hakoda has to say. He is after all the Chief and the boy's father."
Many winced at that. Everyone knew that Sokka being a waterbender was great, it was also dangerous. If Fire Nation caught wind of this, Sokka would be dead.
Hakoda sighed and rubbed at his face.
"We'll send an encrypted message to our Northern sister tribe. Ask for a waterbending teacher for Sokka."
Sending a sea hawk to the northern tribe could take up to over a year. It could be a while before they got a response. Hakoda just hoped the information about a southern tribe waterbender didn't end up in Fire Nation hands.
