Death never thought he could ever fall in love.

It was something that he had come to terms with centuries ago. Thanatos could never love. After all, he was the one responsible for delivering souls to the Underworld. No God would every want to be paired up with Thanatos –the god of death- even if they were immortal. And anyone who would, wouldn't marry him out of love, but for advantage of having Death at your fingertips. A tool, nothing more. And mortals...what sane mortal could love Death? For if he even touched them –just once- their frail mortal soul sucked into the vortex that snatch them away to the Underworld.

He was a fool to think that Eros wouldn't come after him too.

Eros came to him in the form of a young mortal girl of barely nineteen years of age named Eden, so breathtaking even Death himself stopped to stare. Her honey colored hair fell in waves over her lovely golden shoulder. Her hazel eyes sparkled with everything he was meant to oppose –happiness, love, and life. Her everlasting kindness was something he found himself lost in, the delicate way she walked –like a ballerina, full of grace,- the secret steel behind those hazel eyes that proved she was much stronger than she appeared. The simple way she bit the corner of her perfectly pink bottom lip whenever she saw unkindness or unhappiness.

No, she wasn't naïve –she understood the dark realms of the world- but that didn't mean she had to like it.

Whenever he could, Death found ways to see her. Of course he was always busy -collecting souls and traveling to the underworld, so never for long. But he loved watching her climb up onto the roof and hear her whispered prayers - prayers the asked for happiness, kindness, love, and life. Thanatos always found himself disappearing before she said the word life. A silly reminder of what could never be.

Such a silly word with so much weight behind it.

Sighing from the top of the Washington Monument in Washington D.C., he glanced down at his I-pad to see the list of names of the souls to be collected within the next month. He always was curious who would be taken. Hades sent him a list straight from the Fates themselves. A blur of names floated by –thousands- but one particular name caught his eye.

Eden Camilia Garden

Gods didn't need to breathe quite as much as humans, which was good because Thanatos stopped breathing for a good 10 minutes. His vision tunneled right on that name which seemed to grow larger each passing second. No, she couldn't be done living. Her soul was young, with so much more to offer the world. Yet so many young woman –most even younger than her- he had taken and hadn't said a word. Only coaxed them towards his hand and sent them on their way.

He needed to find a way to warn her. Maybe he could trick…no, that wouldn't work. With the advanced soul-tracking system, he'd need to do better than just not collect her soul. He frowned and silently cursed Sisyphus for making them get the new and improved system. Thanatos's greatest shame of falling for a puny mortals tricks and now the woman he loved was going to pay for it.

Thanatos needed to find a way to warn her. Some way to warn her that he was coming to collect her soul. That her prayers would not be answered. That her life was going to fade before her eyes very soon.

Before Thanatos even realized he was traveling.

Hi! So this is a story that's been stuck in my head lately, so...let me know what you think? I know this isn't quite up to par with my usual work, but...bah, I'll make the next chapter better. I promise that my other chapters will MUCH longer too -my other chapters at usually about 1,000 words for those read my work for the first time.

R&R?

Lots of Love,

Tris
