First of all, if you haven't read Cookies: Will's Story, my other story, then you're not going to get how Halt likes blueberries. If you just don't want to read that story, then I'll just tell you. Halt loves, loves blueberries. And this is the story how he came to love blueberries.
Halt pointed to a track on the mossy ground. "What animal is this?" Will squinted at the track for a moment, then looked up. "Rabbit?" Halt raised an eyebrow. "Rabbits," Will corrected himself. Halt nodded. His stomach grumbled for food. He looked up at the sun. It was getting dark. They'd best be getting back to the cabin.
"Will, we're going back," Halt said, turning Abelard around. "Will?" Will was no where to be seen. "Will?" he called out again. Will came rushing in from behind a tree. "Halt!" he said excitedly. "I found a blueberry bush down by the stream. We could have some for desert!" Halt sighed. "Fine, pick some, and then come straight back here. We're going to be late for dinner if you don't hurry." Will nodded eagerly and rushed back into the forest.
Halt waited patiently by the road, and after a few more minutes, Will came out, his hands full of tiny blueberries. "Halt! Try one!" he said, offering some to Halt. Halt picked up one tiny blueberry and put it in his mouth. He chewed, and swallowed. His eyes grew wide. The berries tasted lovely! Like heaven was squeezed into one tiny berry. He ate another one, closing his eyes. Yum. Sweet and satisfying.
They rode back to the cabin in silence. Once they got back, they put their horses in the stables, brushed them down, and gave them juicy, shiny red apples. Will sneaked Tug an extra one, sure that Halt would notice and scold him. Halt did notice, but he didn't reprimand Will. He was too busy thinking about the blueberries.
They ate dinner, and then had desert. Halt ate berry after berry, and when they were done he looked regretfully down at his hands, which were stained blue. Will smiled and gave him his half of the berries. Halt nodded gratefully, then gobbled them all down. Then, after reading some work, and doing paperwork, he went to sleep.
But he couldn't fall asleep. He kept on thinking about blueberries. Finally, he couldn't stand it anymore. He got up, dressed, went into the kitchen, and ate the remaining blueberries in silence. Will came in, sleepy and bleary eyed, and saw Halt. His eyes widened and, then he grinned. "You really like those blueberries, don't you?" he asked.
Halt nodded, guilty. Will burst out laughing and went back to his room, chuckling. Halt stared at him. Apprentices. They were all the same. Annoying, a nuisance, and just down right insane. And so he settled back, and picked up a blueberry. It was the last one. He smiled down at it, then put it in his mouth, chewing slowly, then swallowing. Then, he went to bed.
They would get more tomorrow.
