Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness

I don't own any of these characters, nor do I seek to make any money off of them in any way. Well I'll feel a bit stupid if the leak doesn't even turn out to be CJ, but whatever. Please review if you enjoy it, or if you don't that's fine too.

Danny Concannon sat on the hood of his car. The sun was bright and warm; it was a gorgeous summer day, though his pale Irish skin was burning slightly. It was a Monday and he was in the middle of a story about the President's possibly illegal use of military force in the Middle East. Yes, it was Monday and there was always a story to chase. This particular Monday was exactly ten years to the day that the love of his life had been sent to prison. So it was that he found himself sitting on the hood of his beat up Toyota waiting in the sun for CJ outside of a federal prison.

He thought back to the phone call he'd gotten just before all this hit the fan. It had been 3 o'clock in the morning, and unsurprisingly he had been up. He had distractedly picked up the phone while typing and managed to misspell is when he heard her voice. He had known immediately something was going on it felt different, more on edge than usual there had been a sense of danger in the air that night.

He had never been one to ignore his instincts, but where CJ was concerned he did stupid things sometimes. She had come over to his apartment, and he'd had every intention of figuring out what was going on, but when CJ had kissed him, the plan was forgotten. It wasn't until the next morning he even remembered that he had been concerned about something.

Over coffee he had finally managed to get the story out of her, in vague terms. She had leaked a story but she broke the law doing it and was probably going to get in serious trouble for it. He'd been torn, he was proud of her for leaking despite the consequences, but he was so worried on her behalf. It seemed strange for him to be happy that she was unable to keep confidence to the president, but as a journalist he was uniquely suited to understand the dilemma.

I had taken exactly three months for all of the investigations to take place and findings to be concluded. All three of the astronaut's wives attended in her support. It had meant a lot to CJ that her sacrifice wasn't unappreciated. Being on trial isn't easy for anyone, even President Bartlet had suffered indignity at the public's scrutiny, but CJ with her years as press secretary was flawless. He'd never seen such grace under fire. There at that trial, he'd fallen in love with her all over again.

The gate opened and out came two girls, one was rather muscular and rough looking. The other one had dark circles under her eyes; you could tell this one hadn't been in for very long. Then after they passed there she was, she walked out with her head held high, the way she'd gone in. She was wearing a simple skirt and top that were perfect for the weather. He wouldn't put it passed her to have planned the outfit for her release; he wouldn't put anything past her. "Need a ride?" he asked with his heart in his throat. She walked over to him with a smile that made his heart ache and kissed him. She was finally free to do that anywhere she wanted, she was finally free.
