The county carnival's lights were dazzling, but Derek hardly noticed the display. It was his fourth date with Elaine, and he thought he was going to like her for a while.

''Oh Derek, I love the bunny,'' Elaine exlaimed (he had won it for her only a few minutes ago). but I really have to get home.

Derek thought about inviting her to come over to his house for the night, but quickly changed his mind. Imagine how aquard that would be!

Instead, he asked her,''Do you want to cut through the field??'' She thought about it for about half the time he thought about inviting her to his house. She agreed.

The field was a short cut back to the town from the dock, and almost every one use it. tonight, though, the field was empty. They were walking for about five minutes, when suddenly they heard a menacing growl from behind them. As Elaine turned to look, thinking it was a stray dog, she started screaming on the top of her lungs. Quick as humanly possible, Derek turned and looked at the cause of Elaine's screaming. As he seen it, he gasped.

A wolf, bigger than any man either Derek or Elaine, had seen before, was staring at them with hunger in its eyes. Then, with a vicious snarl, he jumped at Elaine.
