Shadow of the Day

Thalia just wants to forget.

Forget the cold that creeps in through her sleeping bag; forget the hunger that never quite goes away. Forget the memories that are just too painful, and try, somehow try to forget slamming the front door for the last time.

She tried.

She died her hair black and cut it off- and Listened only to heavy metal bands that seemed to understand her pain. She tried to drown out the memories with whatever she could scavenge. Alcohol mostly, but she tried other things too- though she couldn't afford them for long.

So she ran.

Whenever a city got too tough she would grab her bedroll, grab her guitar and scoop up her busking money. But no matter where she ran, they never went away. The monsters always found her-first a fury in Denver, then a harpy in downtown Detroit. And she always had to fight them alone. How could anyone understand? And Thalia had just about given up completely when she first saw Luke Castellan.

It was a hot day- too hot for October and too dry for fall. She heard the commotion, saw the crowds of people.

And then she saw him.

Fighting a laistrygonian with a sword that shone and glistened in the sunlight.

And that's when Thalia Grace knew she didn't have to be so alone- because he was a halfblood too.

Thalia always remembered that year as an Indian Summer.

She wasn't cold because it was so hot, and she wasn't hungry because she had someone to share her money with- and she wasn't alone because she had someone to watch her back.

Luke would joke about her appearance and her music, tell her to lighten up. Thalia acted angry- but inside something was changing. She didn't have to drink, she didn't have to run. Because Luke was her Indian Summer- wherever he went, he took the sunlight with him.

After all the darkness, Thalia realised that light was what she needed.

She needed sunlight to forget.

Of course she would never tell him- but Luke was her lifeline. He made her realise that life could be good again.

First his words, then his laughter-slowly his lips and then his body. He comforted her in the long, dark nights, and he supported her when she got angry over her dad because he knew how it felt.

Luke Castellan made Thalia Grace forget.
