He still wasn't sure why she loved him.

He'd never be a good enough officer to rise up through the ranks to near superstar status like Alex did. He wasn't dashing or mysterious or anything else most girls liked--- like Lucas. And he couldn't think on his feet the way Wes seemed to have a knack for. What he offered her seemed like nothing in comparison, but somehow she saw something worth loving in him. He just wished he knew what.

When he worked up the courage to ask her, she laughed it off at first, saying she wasn't really interested in workaholic pretty boy goofballs. But he had to know, and kept pressing the matter until she made a frustrated sound and cupped his chin with one hand.

"Because you're the first person outside my family to see past my strength, okay?"

And then her lips were against his, the rough gentleness he had come to associate with her, and he decided he was more than okay with it.

She pulled away with a grin. "Of course, it doesn't hurt that you're a really good kisser."
