"Katara, stop.", said Aang, fighting to get the words out.
"Don't talk, you need to save your energy.", said the healer desperately, her glowing hands moving over the Avatar's body.
The airbender reached up then, using every bit of strength left in his damaged body to hold the waterbending master cheek. "It's okay, Sweetie.", whispered Aang, his gentle gray eyes peering into hers. "It's time."
"No!", she yelled harshly, tears streaming down her face. "It's not over. You can't, you can't...It's not fair!", sobbed the woman. She stopped her bending, realizing the futility of her efforts, and crying at what that meant. "You can't die." He couldn't be dying, he was too young, they had so much more to do. He couldn't leave her all alone.
"Katara, I'm a hundred and sixty-five year old man, hehe.", breathed Aang, his voice getting quieter with every word. "That's at least twice as long as most people live."
"That's not fair, you spent a hundred of those frozen in an iceberg, that's not living."
"But the last fifty-three I've got to spend by your side as a husband and father were well worth the ones I lost in the ice."
"What am I suppose to do without you, Aang? I need you, and the kids..."
"You're strong, Katara. It will be hard at first and you'll go through a lot of pain, but you'll get through this, I know you will. The kids will need you to be strong for them, but you still have Sokka, and Zuko, and Toph, and all of our friends to help you through this."
"I don't want to live without you. I, I don't know what I'm going to do if you're not...I need you, Aang."
"I'm sorry I can't stay with you longer. Nothing would make me happier than to spend one more day with you, but this is it.", said the man, his eyelids becoming too heavy to keep up any longer as his vision continued fading.
"Aang!", screamed Katara. "Don't go. Don't leave me.", begged the waterbender.
"We'll meet again, my love. In my next life, I'll find you and you can teach me waterbending all over again and take me penguin sledding. This life of mine is ending, but I know that we will meet again someday, so wait for m-"
"Aang. Aang! No, no, come back. Aang!" cried Katara, but it was too late, he was gone. She rested her head against his still chest, her tears staining his orange and yellow robes as she cried. Aang, her husband, her best friend, he was gone.
Southern Water Tribe
"Congratulations, Senna. You have a healthy baby girl.", said the nursemaid as she wrapped the newborn in a blue cloth and handed her into the arms of her exhausted mother. Senna looked down at the bundle, the girl's tiny arms already reaching out as she cried, announcing her life to the world.
"Tonraq, look. We have a daughter.", cried the water tribe woman. "We're parents to this little miracle."
"She's beautiful.", said the waterbender, leaning down to wrap an arm around his wife's shoulders. He reached out a finger to gently stroke his newborn child's face, making her squeak even more at the contact. "What will we name her?"
"Korra.", said Senna. "Her name is Korra."
"That's perfect.", agreed Tonraq, holding his family close. "Korra, welcome to the world."
