Hermione stared with her mouth wide open, but she was alert enough to duck the apple being thrown at her. "Mom, don't." she breathed.

"Get out," Jade Granger demanded.

Hermione let out a barking laugh as she hugged her bag close to her side. If she was in her right mind, she would have realized it sounded eerily similar to Sirius's laugh, even though she hadn't heard it very much before he went through the veil. "I'm not leaving. Mom, we're working this out. After all, we're family."

"I want you out of my house for good." Jade's face was set in stone.

Hermione took a shuddering breath. It hurt to breathe, but she knew she needed precious air to continue living. "What I'm doing isn't wrong –"

"It's a sin," Jade interrupted. "Two girls should not be together in the way a man and a woman are together, and I will never accept it."

Hermione leaned on the base of the staircase, needing the support to help her continue standing. She had decided to tell her mum that she was dating Parvati, a female classmate. Her parents had been so accepting of her when they discovered magic that she thought they would be equally accepting when she admitted she was a lesbian.

With her father's death, she wanted to be closer to her last remaining parent. She always regretted that she never told her dad the truth about her sexuality, and she did want to make the same mistake with her mum.

She never expected she would be kicked out of the house and told never to return. Her own mum was ready to disown Hermione over something the young Gryffindor couldn't control. "Mum, don't do this. I know it's a shock, but you'll get used to it," she pled, begging her mum with her eyes and words to change her mind.

Jade turned away from her heartbroken daughter. "Get out and stay out," she commanded coolly and left the foyer.

Hermione stared at the wooden banister of the staircase, knowing that she had to leave. Still, she hoped that her mum would change her mind about Hermione's banishment. It was the only thing she had left to cling to.
