A/N: Sam should really be listed as character 1/A/whatever, but this is a Dean/Cas story. Just be forewarned that this story has A LOT of Sam.

~.~.~.~

In the two months he's been working at Los Angeles Bar and Grill ("Serving California Classics to the Kansan Masses!") Sam has seen his coworker Cas smile (really, genuinely smile) a grand total of three times.

Sam meets Cas on his first day, they do the whole awkward introductions and nice-to-meet-you's, and that's about it. They don't speak another word to each other the rest of the day. By his fourth day, Sam has gotten to know a few his coworkers a little; Anna is an art major and likes to doodle on the backs on receipts, Luke has a twisted sense of humor and is frighteningly skilled with a knife, and Gabriel is kind of a douchebag, but he makes the best pie Sam has ever tasted (and due to his brother's obsession, he's tasted quite a few). Cas, however, remains a mystery.

Sam has to admit that the stoic and mysterious act works for him (that and his ability to perfectly mix a drink with his eyes closed make him an excellent bartender), but by the end of his first week Sam is contemplating whether or not Cas could possibly be some sort of android. The robot theory would explain Cas's apparent lack of emotion, his bartending skills, and the fact that, according to Gabe, he has never been late or called in sick. Sam is seriously considering conducting some sort of test like bringing a whole bunch of magnets to work, or 'accidentally' bumping into him to see if he feels like metal, or something, when he catches sight of Genuine Smile 1.

The phone, situated behind the bar, rings one night at work while Cas is busy pouring someone a drink.

"Hey, Sam," Cas calls to him as he passes by, "Would you mind grabbing that for me?"

Sam quickly walks over and picks up the phone, answering it just as instructed, "We're having a great night a L.A. Bar and Grill, my name's Sam, how may I help you?"

The voice of a little girl answers him, "Hi, is Cas there?"

"Uh," Sam peers over at the man in question, wondering what business a child might have with Cas, "Yeah, he's right here, give me a sec."

When Cas glances at him, Sam holds out the receiver, "It's for you."

Cas excuses himself from a customer and takes the phone from Sam, "This is Cas."

And then it happens.

Cas smiles and his whole face lights up. Sam gawks at him for a awkward amount of time before Cas realizes that Sam is still standing there, and in a second the smile is gone and replaced with a raised eyebrow.

Sam mouths an apology and walks away, but he stops Anna on her way back to the kitchen, "Does Cas have a kid I don't know about or something?" he asks in a whisper.

Anna looks extremely confused, "Uh… No. In case you haven't noticed, he's sort of really, you know. Gay."

"Oh." Oh. Sam takes a second to absorb this new knowledge. He hadn't noticed. At all. Sam mentally shrugs and asks, "A little girl just called and asked for him. Do you know who that was?"

Anna smiles and playfully punches him in the arm, "Nosy."

Sam stutters and Anna laughs.

"His brother's got a daughter named Claire."

"He has a brother?" Sam asks.

Anna tuts at him as she turns and heads back to the kitchen, "Back to work, Sherlock!"
