Disclaimer: I don't own the lovely Eppes brothers... nor will I ever. Hope you likes!
I looked up to my right. Don was there, on top of me, protecting me. He was doing as he thought necessary, but I know I would've been fine even he didn't. Suddenly, he gave a short yell; his body stiffened. A few seconds later, something warm and wet hit my cheek. It dripped. It was blood, Don's blood. I looked at him again and screamed. I just screamed. I couldn't stop…
Charlie's eyes snapped open and locked onto Don's. the screaming stopping abruptly. He could see the terror in his big brother's eyes.
"Charlie, what happened? Are you alright?" Don asked quietly.
Tears fell from Charlie's eyes as he recounted his nightmare. However, he got to the end where he woke up and found himself unable to tell Don what happened.
"Did something happen to me?" he asked, "I heard you screaming my name. Did I get shot or something? Tell me, buddy. That's the only way I can make it better."
Charlie could only nod, his lip quivering, tears still falling. Don said nothing but just leaned over and put his arms around his little brother. One hand fiddled the chocolate curls while the other formed a soothing rhythm on his back. The youngest Eppes broke down, sobbing heavily on his brother's shoulder. He hadn't cried so hard since the day of his mother's funeral. He felt something wet hit the top of his head and heard a sniff overhead. He knew Don was crying because seeing Charlie like this was one of the only things that broke him. Charlie just clung to his brother, just like when they were little.
After two weeks, Charlie and Don had forgotten all about the nightmare, and Charlie was finishing a case with the FBI. Meghan and David went to get the suspect while Colby, Don, and himself headed for CalSci so he could do some quick equations to catch the remaining members of the drug ring. Suddenly, a shot rang out. The right front tire blew out; the truck swerved violently. Another shot grazed the roof of the black SUV.
"Get out of the truck!" Don bellowed, "GET OUT!"
He and Colby leapt out he driver's side door, but Charlie remained frozen in the back seat. His mind went blank. He felt Don open the door and pull him out; he hit the ground. A third bullet shattered a window. Charlie whimpered loudly and felt a large weight on his back. He looked up at the spot from which he felt hot air brushing his cheek, to his right.
Don was there, on top of him, protecting him. Charlie could see fear in his eyes. He knew why Don was afraid. It was not because he was being shot at… it was because Charlie was being shot at. Suddenly, he gave a short yell; his body stiffened. A few seconds later, something warm and wet hit Charlie's cheek. It dripped. It was blood, Don's blood. Charlie looked up at him again and screamed. He just screamed. He couldn't stop.
"Don! Don! DOOOONN! D-DOOOOooooonn-n…"
All I could do was scream and cry and forbid him to die and tell him I couldn't live without him… but all I could do wasn't enough for my big brother.
