Slipping into Eternity

Serena's eyes widened in horror as the oncoming blast approached her weary body. It was inevitable. She was going to die whether or not she attempted to jump out of the way.

What she had not seen coming was the red blur that swiftly leapt in front of her own paralyzed form.

There were a few moments of recognition in which Serena's eyes widened even further. Then the blast struck.

Both figures were launched backwards with the sheer force of the attack, landing in a large pile of rubble.

Serena shook her head to clear it and got up from under the eerily still form that lay protectively on top of her.

Her fears were confirmed: the figure was Raye.

The tears began to well up in her eyes as she glared daggers at the monster that had inflicted this hurt.

"You will be destroyed! I will get you someday!" she screamed at it futilely, hoping her words would bring a curse down upon the hideous creature. "Moon Eternal Power!" she yelled, holding up her brooch. Nothing happened. "Moon Eternal Power!" she yelled again, desperation hinting in her voice. "Moon Eternal Power!" she cried to the heavens one last time, but her efforts were in vain.

The queen sunk to the ground, beaten, as the demon monster disappeared into a black, swirling vortex, laughing hysterically as it went.

The tears began to fall down her face, unbidden, as she looked down upon the mangled form of Raye Hino. She knelt down next to the girl.

"Raye." she called softly. "Raye."

The pained girl opened her eyes slowly and brought them to bear on her queen and leader, Serena. A peaceful and pain-filled smile crossed her face.

"You always were too slow and clumsy, meatball head," she choked out, her voice dispersing into a coughing fit in which her hands were covered in dark, red blood.

Serena tried to smile through her tears, but she couldn't stop her lower lip from trembling. "I'm sorry it had to be this way, Raye," she said, barely managing to get her tongue around the words.

"This is the way it's supposed to be, meatball head. One day, I'll get that through that thick head of yours. Shit happens, and you have to learn to take it and move on. That's what I'm doing. I'm not dying, I'm taking it in the gut and moving on," She told Serena, reaching up a hand to wipe the tears off of her face.

Serena just closed her eyes and let the stream of tears continue to fall.

"Serena, would you smile for me? Please? I never really got to see you smile at me. All I ever saw were your tears or your anger. I want to know happiness before I leave you."

Serena complied and a wan smile soon crossed her face, the realization that Raye had actually said her name falling on deaf ears.

Raye's face was paling quickly, and the pool of ever-growing blood beneath her was just getting larger and larger with the passage of time.

Serena had to lean down to hear her last words, for they were barely a whisper.

"Thank you." And then Raye slipped into eternity.
