Sam never competed for their father's affections. Dean was the good little soldier John demanded, Sam forever rebelled. It sickened him; Dean didn't demand a better life for himself, nonetheless tried to give Sam one.
He longed to leave, its inevitability his secret.
Sam would remember everything he hated about John and loved, admired about Dean. He knew who it was that raised him, taught him all the worthwhile, truly good things. But in only a week's time, he was still leaving.
His lips were still practicing the formation of the word goodbye to his brother. Someday he would understand.
