Notes: This takes place when they're in their mid-twenties, after their relationship has become romantic. It was written a while ago on Tumblr, but I figured now is as good a time as any to post it here.
Absolutely Okay
There are times when Yuugi wakes from an awful dream in the dead of night, his heart pounding in a frantic rhythm as his mind races over what he already can't remember.
Sometimes he does remember his dreams, or at least vestiges of them: Snaps and flashes of shadows and symbols that he thinks he should understand, or perhaps even did understand in the moment, but the meaning of which escapes him now. Lying there with a thin sheen of cold sweat over his skin, he takes deep breaths as his eyes adjust to the dark. He feels wide awake even as his body remains exhausted, and he can't stop trembling.
Yuugi has never screamed when waking from a nightmare, but he always wakes with a jerk, as if giving himself a rough shake to pull him from whatever terrors his mind had seen fit to drag up that night. The consequence of doing this when sharing a bed with someone is that it risks waking the other person, and it only takes a moment for Katsuya to roll over and tug Yuugi back against his chest, his body folding perfectly around Yuugi's own.
For a second, Yuugi doesn't know if Katsuya is awake or not. It wouldn't be the first time Katsuya hugged Yuugi in sleep. But after a second Yuugi feels a gentle kiss just behind his ear, along his hairline, and after that Katsuya whispers, "S'all right, you're okay."
Katsuya has no way of knowing what Yuugi dreamed about—no way of knowing why unease and dread have both set up shop in Yuugi's gut, taking turns to spike Yuugi's heart like an angry downstairs neighbor batting the ceiling with a broom handle. But then, Yuugi thinks with a smile, he doesn't need to, because he's right anyway. Whether it was a memory of traumas long past, or present stressors manifested as monsters, or a glimpse at an uncertain or frightening potential event from the future, right now their bed and Katsuya's embrace are safe and warm, and Yuugi is absolutely okay.
Yuugi takes Katsuya's wrist, and lifts his hand just enough to place a soft kiss against his knuckles. Katsuya makes a little sound in the back of his throat, something caught between a sleepy laugh and happy hum, and hugs Yuugi a little closer.
Yuugi falls back asleep in short order—ten minutes, give or take, he wasn't keeping track—and his dreams are pleasant after that.
