Mirror
Darkest blue with violet stain,
Depthless orbs that wax and wane:
Jewels of rapture drenched in pain,
Beholding more than truth;
Penetrating life's deceit,
Smiling through the bittersweet,
Scattered ashes of defeat
And memories of youth.
Contemplating faith forsworn—
Trust betrayed as hope is born—
Silly stitches, weak and torn,
That shackle heart and death.
Living in forever's past,
Dreaming dreams that never last,
Wondering what die was cast
That granted war its breath.
Smiles beneath the shroud decay,
Atrophy each passing day;
Time that takes the ache away
With gentle-killing hands.
Questing through the void of space,
Death to plead and life to place,
Seeking midst the mortal race
For one who understands.
Finding none to hold his trust,
Feeding on inertia's lust;
Living on—for live he must,
For grace that such denies.
He is sapphire's tainted kin,
Broken doppelganger's twin;
All the world contained within
The mirror in his eyes.
