Just a short story I wrote. I hope you enjoy it. PLEASE REVIEW!
A week has passed since Bonnie and I met up with Katniss. The food she gave us ran out yesterday and we are starving now.
"Twill," Bonnie says.
I turn around, but she is not there. "Where are you?"
"Right here," she says poking her head out from behind a tree. "I found some berries."
I walk over to her. She holds out a handful of dark berries that resemble blueberries. They look very familiar, even though I have never actually eaten them.
Bonnie lifts some to her mouth, but I swat her hand away. "Those could be poisonous," I say. "Remember those berries Katniss used?"
Bonnie just purses her lips. "But these are blueberries."
"Have you eaten them already?"
She shakes her head. "No, but they look just like blueberries. They should be safe."
I sigh. "Just put them down. I don't want to take any chances."
"Fine," Bonnie says dropping the berries.
I turn back and start to walk again. We walk about a mile. The sun begins to set. My stomach growls. Maybe I can make a fire and possibly catch a squirrel. It can't be too hard.
"Bonnie, go gather some wood and start a fire," I say. "I will look for some meat."
There is no reply. I turn around. There is no one there. I think Bonnie is just playing a joke. It wouldn't be the first time.
"Bonnie, come on," I say. "Get over here."
Still no reply. Fear runs through my veins. "Bonnie!" I shout. No answer.
I back track. We walked quite a bit, she could be anywhere. The setting sun is not helping. I cannot find her. Where is she. My foot hits something. I look down. It is Bonnie.
"Bonnie!" I scream. I bend down next to her. I shake her shoulder. She is unresponsive. I feel for a pulse. Nothing. I flip her over. Her eyes are shut. Her lips are stained purple with juice. Berry juice. I was right, the berries were poisonous.
I can almost hear her. They look just likes blueberries. They should be safe. But they weren't.
"Oh, Bonnie," I say. "Why didn't you listen to me?"
I fight back tears. She was my only companion. All that I had after my husband died. And now she is gone too. I know I cannot carry on alone.
I take a few berries off the bush Bonnie found earlier that day. I hold them out as if to show someone, anyone, of my actions. I close my eyes and put the berries to my mouth.
