A/N: Hello people reading my story, this is a very short oneshot that I wrote when I was bored in math class one day…hehe that could explain my C in math. It's defiantly not my best, but give me the small joy of actually leaving a review.

Warnings: Major character death (I couldn't help myself), shonen-ai (I hate how it's considered a warning), yep that's about it.

Disclaimer: No, I still don't own Naruto or any of the characters…yet insert evil laugh

And So

Sometimes the path one walks seems clear, you know exactly where you are headed and right where you will end up, but those who walk seemingly clear paths are the ones who in reality have no idea what will become of them. Sasuke had always known that his avenger's task would take him away from his home, away from the people he knew, but he had never expected that his path would lead to this bed he lay in, created from blood on the ground. Naruto believed that his path would sooner or later lead him to his dream of being Hokagae, and that he would one day bring his friend back, but the thought of this end had never crossed his mind. The two boys lay, side by side, polar opposites in every aspect, yet dying the same way. And so, with nothing else to fill the oncoming blackness, the past haunted them both mercilessly in these slowed moments.

Flashback:

"Do you like me?" Sasuke asked in an even voice.

"Sure," Naruto said warily, confused by the suddenness of the question, "You're my best friend, of course I like you."

"No," the raven haired boy corrected himself, now struggling to keep his expression impassive, "I mean more than a friend." Naruto missed the dull gleam of hope that escaped Sasuke's usually emotionless mask and flashed in his black eyes.

The truth hurts…

Naruto's eyes widened in panic, he couldn't tell Sasuke that he loved him, it would hurt the bond that they already shared. It would destroy the friendship they had worked so hard to and carefully to build. It would rip it down without mercy leaving only dust and debris, nothing that could be salvaged. It wasn't worth it…was it?

so we lie

"No." Naruto snorted, "that's Sakura and Ino's job." he laughed lightly, trying to turn the scene into a joke. This time he caught the emotion that slipped past the stolid boy's mask, the hidden emotion that flickered in his teammate's cold eyes, disappointment. But he excused it as Sasuke's depression of being reminded of the unwanted affection he received from the two girls. Naruto never once thought it was disappointment of unrequited love.

And so, they continued on, never really evolving in their relationship. They never grew apart, nor did they grow closer, they were left, rendered helpless at the place that the conversation had abandoned them at.

End Flashback

And so, through out all of their battles fought side by side, and all of their life and death clashes, and as they became enemies, it was never spoken of. Even now as they lay side by side, drenched in their own and each other's unforgiving blood, not a word was said of the hidden feelings, or of the long lost chance of happiness, nothing. Not even the three words that would leave everything forgiven.

And so, knowing that the only that could fix this would be to rewind time and start that day over again, and knowing that that could never happen, the two boys surrendered all buried hope they had clung to all those desolate years.

And so, the two boys, light and dark, opposites yet the same, died side by side, like they had been all along. The memories haunting their last moments, regret and the simple, pure wish to rewind time tearing at their broken hearts, the words lying on their cold lips, never to be spoken, nor to ever be heard.

End
