From the work of
Peter Schilling
"Major Tom... (Coming Home)"
(or, if you will, Captain Jack)
A star cruiser awaited him, if he wanted to leave now. And
he wanted...
Standing there alone, the ship is waiting.
All systems are go. Are you sure?
Jack turned to Gwen and replied with a bitter heart
to her tearful entreaty,
"Just watch me."
Control is not convinced, but the computer
has the evidence. No need to abort
Jack flips open his wrist strap and punches in the coordinates.
The countdown starts.
Watching in a trance, the crew is certain
Nothing left to chance. All is working.
All he has to do now is hit one button and he will have left
behind all the pain, loss, guilt, guilt, loss, guilt
Estelle, Stephen, Tommy, Suzie, the real Jack Harkness…
...and Alex, and his murdered coworkers
that were supposed to celebrate the wonder of a new millenium
with him…
And the name that would crack his entire façade of certainty if
he even thought it…but he couldn't resist and he felt his eyes
swelling, tearing, losing control….
…IANTO…
And Captain Jack Harkness hits the button on his wrist and is Captain
Jack no more…
Trying to relax, up in the capsule. The count goes on.
"Send me up a drink," jokes Major Boe.

Earth below us, drifting falling,
Floating weightless, calling, calling home...
Jack arrives on the star cruiser and the crew avoids his eyes but greets him politely.
"Welcome to our humble ship, Major Boe."
He is led to his quarters where he awaits orders.
In order to be allowed to travel with them he would be required
To serve in some capacity. He waits with a hollow soul to find out what his next life will be like.
Second stage is cut, we're now in orbit.
Stabilizers up, running perfect.
Starting to collect, requested data.
What will it affect, when all is done,
thinks Major Tom?
Back at ground control, there is a problem.
Go to rockets full, not responding
Gwen looked up at the streak of retreating light.
There was nothing she could do. Jack's life was truly
ruined, and she had her own to rebuild.
His connection to Earth was broken…but even then she felt if she could just
reach him, she might be able to convince him to come back...
"Hello Major Boe, are you receiving?
Turn the thrusters on, we're standing by"
Across the stratosphere she hears a final, distant message:
"Give Ianto my love." Then nothing more.
There's no reply.
4...3...2...1
Earth below us, drifting falling,
Floating weightless, calling, calling home...
Far beneath the ship, the world is mourning.
They don't realize he's alive.
No one understands, but Major Boe sees.
"Now the light commands
This is my home. I'm coming home"
Earth below us, drifting falling,
Floating weightless, coming home
Earth below us, drifting falling,
Floating weightless, coming home
Earth below us, drifting falling,
Floating weightless, coming home
Earth below us, drifting falling,
