A/N: This little ficlet hit me around 8:30 a.m. on Sunday morning, November 5, 2006. It seems inspired by the short-story "Debriefing The Warrior/Princess" by Elizabeth Ann Scarborough - which I haven't read in years. scratches head - All alliterations are intentional.
Simply the Best
"What do you mean, you have another mission for me?" the entity asked morosely. "I wasn't supposed to be reborn any time soon. I just helped rid the world of another villain!"
"Yes, you did, and you got to live out a long and happy life with your lover in return," The Recruiter pointed out patiently.
"Can't you send somebody else? I haven't had a vacation in two millennia! A spirit needs refreshing once in a while. Fly with Angels. Sing God's praise. That sort of thing. In fact, I have tickets for the next Heavenly Hosts' Hosiannah. Do you know how hard those are to come by?"
"We wouldn't ask if it wasn't important. This case needs someone with a particularly strong Spirit of Justice, and you're the best we've got."
The entity sighed. They always got him with that one, and they knew it!
"Okay. Fill me in."
The Recruiter beamed and with an elegant gesture turned the desktop between them into a scryscreen.
"Thank you! We promise you won't regret it! We will even reunite you with the love of your last life."
Another gesture and the screen showed two figures, sleeping peacefully in each other's arms.
"Why that one again?"
"Because She thinks you'll need someone with a particularly strong Sense of Self-Preservation."
The entity peered at the desktop for a long time.
"All right. But I want to be the blond this time. And no disfiguring scar, please!"
