Evie knocked a few times on the door where there was a decoration hanging off the door knocker. She thought the man who lived there would remove it out of annoyance, but after discovering that the flimsy paper ghost was still there, doubt flooded her mind. She had put it there a few hours ago after buying it off the market, hoping it would annoy Kai.

She knocked on the door again. Harder. Footsteps creaked behind her and she whirled around to see Lann approaching. She breathed a sigh of relief and said, "Hi Lann. So, where the hell is Kai?"

"Oh, didn't you hear?" Lann said, putting on a big grin. "He moved out. Apparently the Royal Army offered him a nice suite in the Rocheste castle."

"What? Really?" Evie frowned.

"Nah, April Fools!"

"I hate you." Evie pulled her fist back as if to punch Lann, then dropped it. She smiled when he flinched and raised both arms in front of his face.

Lann walked past Evie, fearful that she would punch him for real if he stayed long enough. "He's probably sleeping off the brandies he had last night," he said before entering his room.

Evie, who never liked giving up, gave the door one last knock. She waited a bit, then more, and some more. "Well, I guess Lann's right," she said, slumping her shoulders. The sorceress ripped the paper ghost from Kai's door and crumpled it in her fist. It was getting pretty late in the night, so she decided to call it for the day and get some sleep. She supposed she could go hunting for pumpkin-headed vampires next year.

She opened the door to her bedroom, tossed the crumpled decoration in a bin, and then she turned around to close her door. Before closing her door halfway, she saw a tall figure behind the door and screamed.

"Kai! What the hell are you doing?"

He had a straw hat with a scarecrow mask over his head. Below that, he wore a faded plaid shirt with the tail ripped into tatters and a pair of dark pants. His feet were adorned in large, brown shoes that had seen better days.

"You scared me!" she said.

Kai took off his mask and for a short, short moment, smirked. The smirk vanished as soon as Evie had registered it that she might have imagined it altogether. "Trick or treat," he said in his flat voice.

AN: hey it's me, CarGarZar. I've been really busy, but I decided that, while studying for a quiz I have tomorrow, I should write a little fic! I kinda miss writing these, so I decided to crank one out before hitting the hay. Hope you enjoyed it, hope you had a great Halloween!
