So this is the first of what should be a series of drabbles and things. This was actually inspired because I need some practice before sasusaku month (I'm sure you've heard of it).
Title: A Perfect Storm
Prompt: Power Failure/Fluctuation
Summary: Konoha wasn't known for its turbulent weather. That didn't exclude it though. Non-massacre
Word count: 497
It was the worst storm in Konoha history.
At around 5:30, the warning was sent out. Everyone to shelter.
The Uchiha compound had a large, concrete building for clan meetings which had an equally spacious basement. Mikoto Uchiha pestered her husband to help shelter their side of town. They surely had enough room, she argued. Fugaku caved and opened his gates to the neighborhood around the Uchiha compound.
And that was how Sasuke Uchiha found himself sitting in a corner, holding a book to his face. He wasn't really reading the words. It was too chaotic for that. Sasuke cursed the storm that forced everyone here, too close for his comfort. Uchiha members had more or less separated themselves from the others, migrating to one side of the room, save the few who found friends in the mass. Some people had brought screen dividers and were setting up a corner for themselves. Sasuke closed his eyes. The sound of the wind was already picking up outside. He could hear the creak of abused trees, the beginning of a torrential downpour.
"Sasuke?" a voice jolted Sasuke back.
Sakura stood before him, her green eyes wide and her pink hair pulled into a sloppy ponytail. She looked a bit frazzled.
"Is it alright if I sit with you?" Sakura asked. Sasuke glanced at her. Sakura took that as affirmation and sat down.
"My family lives in the building down the street," Sakura explained, pointing forward.
Sasuke looked over and saw the man and woman who undoubtedly had to be Sakura's parents. Who else would have pink hair?
Sasuke nodded and opened up his book.
"It was awfully nice of your family to open up this warehouse," Sakura continued. That was one thing Sasuke could count on about her. She didn't stop talking.
A loud crash echoed from outside. Then pitch black.
The noise became unbearable. People were yelling. Children were sobbing.
"Come here," Sakura called out, her voice softer than before.
Sasuke's eyes adjusted to see a small girl. One of his cousins, if he was correct.
"What's your name?" Sakura held the child in her lap.
"Rina," the little girl said tearfully. "I can't find my parents."
"Then why don't you stay with Sasuke and me? When the storm is over, we will find them," Sakura assured.
Sasuke had never seen this nurturing side of Sakura before. Her voice was calmer, her body next to his stronger somehow. Sasuke found himself admiring that. He admitted he looked down on her at team training. But here, taking care of a terrified child, Sasuke was the one lacking, and Sakura was the one more experienced.
Sakura lured Rina to sleep. Once the girl was out, Sakura sighed and leaned against Sasuke.
"How-," Sasuke started.
"I have a five year old cousin. She lives with us," Sakura said sleepily.
Sasuke adjusted his shoulder so that Sakura would be more comfortable, and let her nod off.
Maybe this storm wasn't so bad.
So I'll see when I come up with another. TTFN.
