What if it had been Gale and Katniss in the Hunger Games? (Note: Overall, this fanfiction follows a similar plot to book but deviates at some points.)

"I volunteer. I volunteer as tribute."

Gale's deep voice echoed through the woods.

Murmurs quickly rumbled amidst the crowd. Two volunteers? This was unprecedented in District 12. First, Katniss Everdeen had taken the place of her younger sister, Prim. Now that was understandable. They were family after all. And, to be honest, Prim never would have even stood a chance.

Gale's replacement for Peeta Melark, on the other hand, was a complete surprise to everyone in the district. But most of all, to Katniss.

"No!" Katniss yelled the minute those words first left Gale's lips.

But it was too late.

Gale had already made up his mind as his made his way through the crowd to accept his position on the stage beside his childhood best friend, Katniss.
