The Night's Journey
Night engulfed me. It was only an hour after dusk and yet the darkness was near absolute, except for a few bright circles cast onto the cobblestone road ahead of me. The light was coming from old street lanterns, flickering as the gentle midnight breeze drifted by their flame.
Houses lined the street, but no sign could be found of the inhabitants. Everything seemed empty. Slowly I proceeded, not knowing where my journey would lead, or what the purpose of it was. All I knew was the night and the stars. In this never-ending night, I will follow those beautiful sparks in the sky. They will guide me to wherever destiny wants me.
As I passed the threshold of my little town, I hesitated. I had finally realized it. I would never return here, though here is all I've ever known. I have taken my first step off the well-beaten, familiar path, and into the terrifying unknown.
The wind was growing now. Its soft blow escalated. No longer soft, it spun around me. My long ebony hair flew as my white dress twirled about my legs. It was as if the wind was pushing me onwards, encouraging.
I started to move again. I ran. Never have I run this hard. Not paying attention to my setting at all, I nearly tripped, but I just kept running. I needed to. I went through grass fields, and tree-dense forests. For an eternity it seemed. Time passed me by as I cut through the wind's current. I was just running, running, and running.
Suddenly, I stopped. My breath caught, making it hard for me to breathe. Slowly, I took my new surroundings in. The night sky was darker than black, creating a mysterious canvas to showcase the bright stars. I was standing in an open glade now. Delicate little flowers of purple and white covered the ground, peeking out between the soft knee high grass. Their aroma was strong and yet quite beautiful.
Nearby, I could hear the ethereal splashing of a stream flowing. It was a thin ribbon of water that reflected the moon's full roundness. I walked over and dropped down to my knees. I cupped my hands and placed them into the cool liquid. I drank the water, savouring its sweet taste. Satisfaction glided through me.
An alluring sound reached my ears. It was the affectionate melody of a flute that was carried by the breeze. I stood up and turned to where this calming music came from. There in the centre of the glade was a great, solitary tree. Its leafy boughs reached upwards towards the heavens, as they probably have for hundreds of years.
Leaning against the tree's majestic trunk was a figure. Light and shadows took turns illuminating the stranger as the leaves moved overhead in the now diminishing wind. I could not see too clearly, but I knew the captivating music came from there. Carefully I walked over. Step by step, I came nearer. I could see his silver instrument gleam in the night's light. His enchanting song stopped, and so did I.
His hair was a dark blackish-blue shade, but there was something else more striking about him. It was his eyes. The saphire orbs stared right at me, almost as though he could see right through me. I was mesmerized.
Slowly, he moved his flute away from his lips, never once removing his breathtaking gaze away from my eyes. Tears started making their way down my cheeks. I took the last few steps separating us. There we stood together, him holding my trembling hands. An unspoken understanding passed between us. We embraced. It was one filled with the greatest love that time has ever known.
I was so far away from my small town, and yet I was finally homeā¦
