Morning Routine

By White Turns Blue

James Potter's favorite time of day was morning.

He loved the feeling of a morning shower; it woke him up in a way that nothing, not even coffee, could.

He loved breakfast foods, all of them. Sausage, pancakes, eggs, toast. He'd take them all.

But the thing that James Potter loved most about mornings was that Lily Evans had her guard down.

They had a morning routine in the Head Tower. James would wake up at six sharp and take a shower. As soon as he would finish, he would open the door to the bathroom, and at exactly six fifteen every morning, Lily would stumble in. James would put toothpaste on his toothbrush, then hand the toothpaste to her, and they would brush their teeth together like an old married couple.

Never in his entire life had brushing teeth been such a joy to James Potter.

Lily was cooperative in the morning. She didn't scream at him; she didn't glare at him. She simply accepted him. It was the one time of day that Lily didn't fight him, didn't fight the possibility that maybe, someday, they could be together.

It was ludicrous. During the day, despite the fact that they had become friends this year, Lily Evans was still abusive towards James Potter. She hit him, she insulted him, and she abused him in every way possible.

But the fact that Lily Evans did none of these things in the mornings undid everything that she did do during the day.

James Potter lived for his morning routine because his morning routine included Lily Evans.

Lily Evans's least favorite time of day was the morning.

She hated waking up. Her bed was so comfortable; why would she ever want to leave it?

She hated breakfast foods. Sausage, pancakes, eggs, toast. She absolutely loathed them all.

But most of all, Lily Evans hated mornings because of the morning routine.

Every morning, at six fifteen exactly, Lily would groggily stumble into the shared Head bathroom, and she was greeted by the sight of a shirtless James Potter, and then, they brushed their teeth together.

Never in her entire life had she hated brushing her teeth as much as this.

It was distracting that he was there (shirtless). How could she ever concentrate on getting all of the plaque and bacteria out of her mouth if James Potter's beautiful stomach was on display? God was taunting her.

It was bad enough that this year, she had grudgingly become friends with him, and even appreciated his company. She was going crazy. Lily Evans did not like James Potter. It was a rule carved in stone; yet somehow, Lily Evans found herself liking James Potter in a way that she never thought possible.

Goddamnit, she loved him. Loved him. Loved. Him.

How could she possibly let that happen?

So, every morning, when she went into the bathroom, she let her guard down for a little bit. She showed him that maybe she cared. She didn't throw things or scream at him. She accepted him. It was the one time of day that she allowed herself to feel for him.

She hated that. She hated that she even had to let herself feel. She didn't want to like James Potter, and that moment of weakness every morning just ruined her day.

Lily Evans hated mornings because mornings meant James Potter.
