Lily and Sirius sat next to each other. Their hands were clasped as if the other one was the only person who could give them the comfort they needed.

Remus sat on the floor, his eyes staring at the opposite wall, but they were blank. "It's not fair," he whispered.

Lily rested a hand on her baby bump. "My son will never know his daddy."

Sirius swallowed, looking down at his lap. "I lost my best friend, my brother in all but blood. How do we move on?"

Lily turned her head to stare at him. "You'll stay, right? I can't raise him without you. Please..." she begged, tears coming to her green eyes.

Sirius gently wiped them away. "Don't worry. I'm not going anywhere."

Remus looked back at them with dead eyes. "It's what James would have wanted. We'll both be here for you, Lily. You will never have to do this alone."

Lily sniffled and leaned into Sirius's shoulder. "Thank you," she whispered.

Months later, Sirius sat up in the middle of the night, wide awake. He held Harry James Potter, rocking the baby so Lily didn't have to get up again.

It didn't matter because Lily was up, and she came into the room. "Maybe you should get some sleep."

Sirius shook his head, his eyes focused on the sleeping baby.

Lily rested a hand on Sirius's shoulder. "What are you thinking about?"

"About how it's my fault Harry doesn't have his father."

"Sirius –"

"No, Lily," Sirius interrupted, "James died because he saved me. He should have just left me there and came home to you safe and sound. His life was worth much more than mine."

She squeezed his shoulder. "If he had done that, he wouldn't be the man I fell in love with, and he wouldn't be the man you thought of as a brother. He could never turn his back on a friend, no matter what the risks were. And I don't think he would want you to blame yourself."

"It hurts," Sirius murmured.

"I know." There wasn't anything else Lily could say.

Many months later, after Harry's first birthday had come and gone, Sirius was watching Harry sleep once again when Lily entered the room.

"He looks more and more like James," Sirius idly commented.

"He'll definitely be a heartbreaker," Lily agreed.

Sirius took her hand. "Do you think James would hate me for falling in love with you?"

Lily kissed his cheek. "No. Wherever he is, I'm sure he's happy that I have someone who loves both me and our son, someone he knows he can trust."

Sirius didn't say anything else as he dropped her hand in order to wrap his arm around her waist, pulling her body close to his. "I do love you."

"I love you too," she stated simply and both of them continued to watch a sleeping Harry, a young child who didn't yet understand the harsh realities of the world. If Sirius and Lily had their way, Harry would never understand such a thing.
