"Half way through practice, Ender noticed Petra and Dink together, standing in the doorway, watching." Ender's Game
Petra sat up on her bunk doing a last minute assignment for Calculus. Lights were going to shut off soon, so she was in quite a hurry. Bonzo didn't like it very much if anybody stayed up later than they had to. As she keyed up her last answer her MAIL waiting icon started to blink.
"Just a minute," she murmured to no one in particular. She opened up the virtual letter. Who would ever send a letter to me - Petra? She was very pretty for her age, but at battle school, if you were a girl you were usually tougher than a boy.
Petra-
Thanks for everything. I'm going to be ok here. Dink Meeker is my toon leader- he's a decent guy.
-Ender
She sighed. The poor kid. I've probably been the only one nice to him here. She smiled to herself-and then the lights went out.

Petra thought she'd check on Ender. She knew his practice with launchies were usually around now. She walked towards where the battle room (or rooms, she thought). She chose to enter the one she knew Ender would be in.
To her surprise she found out she wasn't to be Ender's only view that night. Standing in the doorway/gate to the practice was a taller than average boy, (still taller the her) in the Rat Army uniform. Skinny, with sandy hair he leaned on the left side of the small entrance.
Just ignore him, she thought. He's from another army, and after all if Bonzo found out he would be on her case for talking to someone from another army.
So she leaned on the other side of the doorway. She focused with all her might on Ender's practice session. He was doing better, but his limbs, it seemed, had a mind of their own. She smiled.
She slipped a glance over at the boy from the Rat Army. To her surprise he was taking a gland at her too. Their eyes made contact.
Petra recognized Dink Meeker. He had been in the launchy group ahead of her.
Dink continued to study her,"You're Petra Arkanian, aren't you?"
"Who else did I remind you of?"
He shrugged,"You know, Ender said you taught him just about everything he knows about the game."
"I only taught him how to shoot," she corrected. "I believe he learned a lot watching the practices he was excluded from."
"Either way you taught him well," Dink concluded with a finality.
Petra watched the launchies. Suddenly she faced him,"Take good care of him, he's only a little-"
"Don't worry. He's been taking self-defense lessons from his desk," Dink said. "Anyway we were all little when we came here."
Petra turned as to leave.
"What happened to your face?"
Petra was shocked Dink had asked her that, even more shocked that he had noticed.
"Bonzo. I was defending Ender."
"I'm sorry," Dink's eyes met hers again. His hand extended and touched her cheek where the scar was. Closing her eyes in pain Petra ran from the battle room.
