How was she so far away? Every minute she felt further away, even as she moved herself closer to him in her sleep. He nuzzled her shoulder, leaving kisses, light like butterfly wings. Imperceptible. He didn't want to wake her. To wake her would be to lose her. She was afraid of many things in her sleep, but she was not afraid of him. She slept in the fetal position.
Who did this to you?
Soft kisses in her hair.
You're mine.
She stirred, and he knew she'd slip away in a matter of minutes. She was holy water just out of the sinner's reach.
They would die just as unbelieving as they lived, as they loved.
"Mmm. Morning."
"It's still night," he whispered in her ear, pulling her closer to him.
She squirmed away.
"I better get back to my tent."
"What?"
"Nothing personal. It's just...I can't sleep when I'm not in my own tent."
"Want me to walk you home?"
You're mine.
But she didn't. And he didn't want to know why she didn't want to wake up in the morning together. Why she didn't want to be together in light - only in the dark. Only when she could sneak away.
And she kissed him. But she still left.
He sat alone.
Maybe she'd come back tomorrow night.
They will tell me there are plenty of fish in the sea. And I will say, "Forget that. She was my ocean."
