Rain fell in sheets as it mixed the dirt and blood of the many fallen soldiers from both Alfred's and Arthur's side. Alfred desperately wanted to be free of Arthur's tyrannical rule and wanted to live on his own in democracy. That is what sparked the American Revolution. Arthur didn't want Alfred to leave. So the two fought for what seemed like an eternity. The year was 1783, Yorktown, Virginia.
"Alfred! Please, reconsider your actions against me! Come, we can talk this over!" Arthur said as he looked Alfred deep within the eyes. Alfred looked back, his face expressionless. "Why? So you can rule over me once more and treat me like a dog under your foot?"
Arthur sighed. This was harder than it seemed. He raised Alfred from the time of the Pilgrims to the present. He did not want him to go, thus he kept his money for himself. "Alfred, please. I don't want you to go!" he pleaded as he stepped forward. But as he did, Alfred pointed his pistol at Arthur's heart.
"No. What makes you think that I will return to you after what you have done to me? I have had it with your twisted lies and deceit! This is where the line is drawn. Surrender here, or perish!"
Arthur hung his head. Mixed emotions swirled inside him as he tried to think of a way to win him back. His son was not convinced that things will turn out once things could be talked over. "Alfred…" he said as he took one more step forward. Alfred cocked the pistol, the ammunition ready to be fired. "Not one step closer!"
Arthur stopped. Alfred was no longer his little boy. He wanted independence, away from his rule and to move out on his own. But, his emotions got the best of him and he fell to his knees and placed his hands over his tearing eyes and sobbed. "Alfred! Don't leave me! I am sorry for what I have done! Just…Don't leave me!"
Alfred rolled his eyes, but un locked the pistol and put it down and stooped to Arthur's level. "I am not going to leave you. I will always be here. But it is time for me to move on anyway. I need to be independent and think for myself, and I need my own finances to do so."
Arthur then tightly wrapped his arms around his son. "I am so sorry!" he cried. Alfred patted him on the back and returned the embrace. "You have your life and I have mine. But, it is time to say good bye for now."
