Chapter 1 - Chivalry of the Knight

"I never wanted to believe in supernatural and fantasies, but the bloodshed that I have witnessed can never be forgotten."

Second year high-school student Azusagawa Sakuta has been repeatedly pondering this thought for the last 24 hours as he slumped his drowsy body on the bed, his face completely devoid of emotions and senses as if his soul has diminished. Apart from the soft glow of the morning sun though, there weren't anything in sight capable of alleviating his mental exhaustion or at least his loss of stamina, but Sakuta couldn't care less about neither.

Ever since random people began to inconspicuously disappear around Japan, Sakuta has started to come to the understand that the phenomenon he witnessed from yesterday is in fact, what predated these incidents. No one would have believed him even if he tried, but in reality, there was nothing fallacious about the horror that Sakuta was desperately trying to forget. After all, the sight of supernatural monsters roaming on the face of the Earth is exactly what an ordinary person needs to lose their sanity.

If memory had served him well, Sakuta remembered precisely seeing what it appears to be a human-sized spider creature lingering in the alley just behind his apartment block, its razor-sharp jaws emit an amplified sound effect of stomach growl as it breathes.

Like a prey seeing his predator, Sakuta had little time to scream as he begin to advance backwards, undoubtedly petrified by the monstrous presence of the spider creature. He then closed his eyes, hoping that whatever he has witnessed is merely an assertion of his own imagination due to the work exhaustion he experienced in his part-time shift.

But there was something else, something much more terrifying, yet intriguingly refreshing than the bloodshed he witnessed.

A talking bat.
