They walked away, away from what just had happened. For a few more minutes, a few more hours, they would try to temporarily forget about the exchange between them. Then it would come back to them. Right in their faces, and hurt. It would hurt a lot because deep in their hearts, and (or) minds, they would know. Know it hadn't been the right choice. Know she could have tried, know he would not be able to move on without looking back. He would think she hadn't felt for him what he felt for her, and she would think he could move on and let her go without taking another shot. There would be pain, and regret. And pain again in the others eyes.

She could not let that happen, could she? She couldn't take any of her words back, yet the sudden gamble that had come to her mind was a dangerous one, especially for a beginner. But she had always been eager to learn, hadn't she? And he was one of the best of teachers.

It would hurt, twice as much if she was wrong. It was a risky bet, but he was worth the risk. She stopped dead in her tracks, causing him to stop as well as she was still clinging to his arm. She barely allowed him to turn toward her to ask why she had stopped before she kissed him. At first hesitantly, then passionately as she noticed no objection coming from him. Too stunned to react, it took his brain a few more seconds to realize what had happened. She was kissing him. On the mouth. Right after telling him they had no chance together. That woman was really driving him crazy. Yet it was part of what he loved in her.

As he responded to her kiss, they were already too far to hear the roar of one psychologist in the nearest building. His book was crap, he would have to patch it up from the very beginning. But for God's sake, they actually made it together ! He grinned as he noticed they were still kissing, and smile even more mischievously while taking a quick snap with his phone. That was for sure the biggest piece of evidence ever found in the cooperative inquiry with FBI and scientists involved. And he knew few people back in the Jeffersonian who would actually love to be part of that discovery.

As they walked away, he smiled. The two of them really were something. Something. An item, from now on - or so he hoped. And that was partly because of him. Of that he was proud. His work was done here. He threw his manuscript away and grabbed his coat, switching the lights off. He wouldn't be the only one to have someone to go home to anymore.
