Always There

(I wrote this after seeing the Japanese ending to episode 77 of Sonic X. Seeing Tails tell Cosmo that he loves her before he has to do the unthinkable to her was just amazing.)

Tails sat up in his room, wanting to be alone. He couldn't believe that he had had to do this to Cosmo. She was really the one for him. As unusual as it seemed for someone of his age, which was eight years old; Tails felt like Cosmo was his true partner.

She was supportive of him when he was down, he protected her when she was threatened, and they were both meant to be together. But she had to sacrifice herself to save the galaxy. Tails couldn't understand it; she promised she would live with them. He wanted that to be true, as he knew they could have a life together.

"Cosmo, why did I have to do this to you? I didn't want it to be like this; I didn't want to hurt you. How can I live with myself, knowing what I've done to you?" Tails asked, sadly.

He knew that Cosmo didn't want to end it this way either. He somehow knew her inner sadness at how this was going to end. He didn't want to hurt her; he couldn't bring himself to do it.

But he didn't have a choice, he had to do it. The last words Tails said to Cosmo before he did it ran though his head; they were loud and clear. "Cosmo... I love you!"

He had to say it. He wanted the last thing that Cosmo heard from him to be the best thing she could ever hear from him. Even though she didn't respond, Tails somehow knew she heard him.

When Tails looked at his desk, he was surprised to see a letter to him. "What's this?" he wondered. When he saw who it was from, he nearly teared up.

To Tails

I miss you. It's not the same, knowing I won't be able to see you again.

I'm sorry I couldn't keep my promise to you true; I hope you understand.

I want to tell you that no matter what, I'm always here for you, even when you don't realize it.

I look forward to when I can see you again and I want to say... I love you, Tails and I always will.

Tails smiled. He felt so happy to know that Cosmo was still with him when she really smiled. He had to be strong for her, because he knew that it's what she would have wanted.
