Mother's day was always hard. Everyone always kept to themselves locked in their rooms, or walking around Quigley woods. But this year was different. Rosalind was awoken by the pitter-patter of tiny feet and Batty and Ben giggling and the ran into her father and Iantha's bedroom. Groaning, she put her pillow over her head to try to block out the noise.

"ROSALIND!" Batty yelled knocking loudly three times on the door. "Rosalind, we're making waffles, do you want any?" Maybe if she kept her pillow over her head and didn't answer her littlest sister would go away. No such luck. "ROSALIND, are you awake?" Groaning, Rosalind rolled out of bed and stumbled to the door. "I am now, come on you little rascal, waffles. Batty giggled, and ran to the kitchen where there was already a cacophony of noise coming from downstairs.

Rosalind followed her, but stopped at the door of the kitchen. She watched as her father wrapped his arms around Iantha's waist and kiss her cheek as she poured chocolate milk for the younger kids. Rosalind took a step back from the door. Her father used to kiss her mother that way. She tuned on her heel and ran back up to her room. It's still too soon. She thought, pulling out a photo album she kept on the bottom shelf of her bookshelf. There was mother's day as it used to be. Rosalind and Skye smiled at the camera with gap-toothed smiles, and Jane sat on their mother's lap, a huge maple leaf on her head. Her mother wore a macaroni necklace, made by one of the sisters, as she sat underneath a tree in Quigley woods.

Someone was knocking on her door again, softer than before. Her father entered, a plate of waffles in his hands. "I saw you run back upstairs and I thought you might want these." He set the plate down on her desk.

"It's still too soon. I have to spend mother's day alone, for at least one more year. I mean you and Iantha have only been married for a year."

"Take all the time you need sweetheart, we understand." He kissed her forehead.

"Daddy?"

"Yes?"

"Can you tell Iantha that I'll be down soon, I just need a few more minuets."

"Of course."

She sits on her bed and holds the picture of her mother in her arms. Happy Mother's Day mommy", she whispers. "We'll always love you."

Happy Mother's Day!
