Iruka stumbled along miserably. He liked his sensei, but would it hurt the man to grow a sense of humour?
The thing with the tomato sauce and the spear had only been a joke after all. It wasn't like anyone would actually spear Iruka, no matter what he'd done to their cow.
Chouza-sensei should be proud of his student's planning skills; it had been quite a feat to lure the farmer and Chouza-sensei to that field at exactly the right moment.
Iruka had to make sure that the farmer found the purple cow first so he'd be properly outraged, and then Chouza-sensei had to find Iruka before the farmer did, but the farmer needed to be close by and angry to set the scene.
It had required very careful planning.
Alright so maybe his teacher had reacted a bit more…violently…then he'd expected. But then again, Iruka had given an exceptional performance.
His timing had been perfect. The irate farmer was just storming towards them when Chouza-sensei found Iruka desperately clutching the 'spear piercing his bloody chest'. Iruka had given a death rattle that was pure genius, artfully coughing up some thinned tomato sauce.
He'd never known his already pale teacher could turn that shade of white.
His plan had worked perfectly, right up until his teacher started throwing kunai at the farmer. Luckily the farmer had been able to dodge the volley of sharp pointy weapons, but only because Iruka had started laughing at the exact moment his sensei made to throw.
After that it was Iruka who was dodging kunai. He'd never seen his easy going sensei so enraged in the three months that he'd been genin.
He'd gotten a very thorough dressing down after the teacher finally caught him and he'd been made to apologize to the farmer, clean the cow and clean the farmer's stables as punishment.
That had been yesterday. So today he'd fully expected his teacher to be over it. Chouza-sensei wasn't normally a man to hold a grudge, Iruka knew from ample experience.
This time was different though, his sensei gave him the worst jobs all day long, but even worse, he didn't smile at Iruka. Not once.
It made Iruka want to apologize to his teacher; he'd never meant to really upset the man after all. He'd just had a really sucky weekend and he'd wanted some fun.
There'd been a festival this weekend with a fair and a bake sale and stuff. All his friends were going with their family and he'd felt awkward about going by himself so he'd stayed home. He'd felt lonely, miserable, angry and bored, so he'd planned out his prank. It seemed very funny at that time.
Right now, cold wet and muddy and with his teacher ignoring him, it didn't seem very funny at all anymore.
