A/N I wrote this the other day and I kind of liked it so here it is. Please enjoy!
Merlin
On the night before his nephews execution Gaius stepped into the dimly lit dungeons where he was being kept. Sir Damian, who was guarding the dungeons attempted to block his way but with a single icy glare he was allowed to pass without so much as a word.
Merlin sat with his back leaning against the stone wall, his head resting his shoulder. His blue eyes were sad and despondent as they watched a small flame hovering in his hand flicker and twist. Several bruises marred his face and there was a small trickle of blood coming from his head; tremors of fear and cold shook his body.
"Merlin…" Gaius whispered unable to keep the anguish he was feeling out his voice. Blue eyes flickered up and met his and suddenly Merlin leapt to his feet at the sight of him, the flame dying in his hand.
"Gaius- what are you doing here? I-I didn't think they'd let you come…." He trailed off as he met Gaius at the bars. There was a moment of silence between them as they both took in the sight of each other, taking comfort in each other presence for what could possibly be the last time.
"I'm sorry Gaius." Merlin whispered brokenly.
"You have nothing to be sorry for. Merlin-"
"C-could you do something for me?" He interrupted, his voice wavering.
"Anything."
Tears welled in Merlin eyes, threatening to spill over and his hands shook as he gripped the bars of the cell so tightly that his knuckles turned white. "C-could you tell my m-mother that it was an accident?" He begged, the tears starting to spill over. "Tell her… tell her it was bandits- anything- just don't let her know that I w-went out like this. Please Gaius! Make sure that she's okay… it wasn't her fault that I'm like this."
"It wasn't your fault either Merlin!"
"Promise me Gaius! P-promise you'll tell her…" He choked off, sobs wracking his body.
For a moment he couldn't say anything as tears of his own slid down his cheeks and he stared into the frantic, terrified blue eyes silently begging him to do this one last thing. "I promise…" He whispered.
Relief flooded Merlin's eyes and he choked out a thank you between sobs before he slowly slid down the wall and buried his face in his arms.
Gaius kept his promise.
A/N Yes. Merlin died. I don't really know why he was sentenced to death so I'd like your opinions. :D Thanks! Please review!
