The first thing she remembered when she woke up was his smiling face.

The way the light seeped in through gray clouds and lightly spilled off his blonde shaggy hair, just to do his green eyes justice and to appease her of his kind features; it was odd. She didn't expect anyone to notice or care about the poor girl, who was distraught and looking so damaged in the shadows of an old brick alley. She thought back to how she stumbled here, tired and feeling so light-headed, hoping and praying to make it home so she can lie in her bed to get rid of the horrible pain she felt creeping into her stomach; it wasn't long before she started losing her vision, and she doubled over from the gut-wrenching shock that went through her suddenly weightless body. The floor never looked so comfortable. And with her mind racing as fast as it was the only thing that she could comprehend of the thoughts there, was something telling her to sleep. Her body moved to the side and she brushed her palm against the concrete to get a tight enough grip so she could raise her torso, the small sharp rocks scattered on the ground digging into her hands. She'd never felt so aware of herself or the world around her, and she's never had her head so absent.

"I don't think you can get up on your own yet; here, take my hand." He said, holding his hand out to her. She didn't hesitate to take it, but refused to believe it was because she couldn't do it herself. He was simply being nice, and she didn't want to come off wrong. He raised her to her feet only to have her push him away the instant she was standing, brushing off her dirt covered pink dress with a lowered head in attempt to hide her flushed face. The heat was catching up to her again, but she wasn't sure it was because of her embarrassment.

"Thanks." She mumbled with her voice low and raspy. His eyebrows rose as he begun smiling once again, instead he sprang instinctively to catch her as she tipped over from exhaustion. He held her up, surprised as he looked down to see she was sweating and pale, her eyes closed and her nose twitching; her breathing was even but she was barely conscious. He frowned, picking her up the best he could and cradling her in his arms as he walked to find a place for her to cool down.

Through slightly open eyelids she stared at him, his face determined and his mouth closed solid in a thin line. The saddest realization came to her at that moment; never in her life had someone treated her so sweetly, not even her own parents, and yet here was this complete stranger making her illness feel like a blessing as he helped her.

She lifted her chapped lips into a grin, and could've sworn that before she closed her eyes and drifted off, she caught a glimpse of a glowing white halo above his odd football-shaped head.
