Softly we tremble tonight,
picture perfect fading smiles are all that's left in sight,
I said I'd never leave, you'll never change
I'm not satisfied with where I'm at in life.

Hermione sat on the steps of the entrance leading into the courtyard. She watched her warm tears fall from her face onto the ground. She was unaware to all of her surroundings. she was numb to the bitter cold snow falling lightly on the ground beside her. She was deaf to the laughing of her peers and the screeching of the owls coming in from their nightly hunt. She was blind to the soft blankets of white snow that covered the hills and treetops. He had left her. he said he was too dangerous. it was for her own good.

Am I supposed to be happy?
With all I ever wanted, it comes with a price.
Am I supposed to be happy?
With all I ever wanted, it comes with a price.
You said, you said that you would die for me...

She felt the tears come more rapidly. What did he know? he had no idea what she wanted out of life. all she wanted was to be with him... to be near him, but because he was so stubborn, he would hear nothing of it. He for some reason thought she was going to have a better life without him in it. Was she supposed to feel different? was she supposed to be happy about the whole thing? She didn't understand why he had this insufferable and incurable tendency to think he was the source of evil. He was the opposite. he was evil's worst enemy. It infuriated her when he thought so ridiculously.

We made plans to grow old,
believe me there was truth in all those stories that I told.
Lost in a simple game cat and mouse,
Are we the same people as before this came to light?

What ever did happen? she didn't understand. they had been so happy. so she had gotten hurt a couple of times. big deal. he couldn't keep her from dying. one day they were going to grow old and it was going to happen eventually. they couldn't avoid each other forever. it didn't work like that. She didn't think he understood. they couldn't be playing this game back and forth forever. if he ignored her all together she was sure she would die even quicker. she may need to be protected, but so did he. he wasn't invincible. She knew him better than to illusion herself in thinking like that. His lightning bolt scar just showed his near death experience. it showed his past. it showed his pain. it didn't give him the power of invincibility despite what he and the wizarding world thought.

Am I supposed to be happy?
with all I ever wanted, it comes with a price.
Am I supposed to be happy?
with all I ever wanted, it comes with a price.
You said, you said that you would die for me...

You must live for me too'...
For me too...yeah, yeah...
You said that you would die for me...

He may have thought that she was supposed to be ecstatic for him leaving her. he probably thought that she was bouncing off the walls with happiness. He must have thought she would go out in celebration of the occasion of him leaving her life. it didn't work that way! when was he going to get it through his thick head? he had made the promise he would risk his life to save hers. He didn't understand that if he were to do that she would not be able to live.

She broke out of her trance when someone had tapped her shoulder. She turned around in surprise. It was Luna.

"Hermione, i was just coming to tell that Harry has decided to go after Bellatrix Lestrange."

"He's what?!" she yelled in disbelief and anger as she jumped up from her spot on the ground.

"Ron,Neville and I tried to talk him out of it, but he won't think twice about it. He's convinced he's a danger to us. He says he has to do this alone. he won't let any of us come with him. He must be really sad about Sirius's death. He must really want a revenge murder." Luna said. Hermione felt the tears come back.

"no, he doesn't. " She looked at Luna. it was obvious she was thouroughly confused.

"He doesn't want revenge murder. He wants a mercy killing. He thought he had taken care of everyone in between him and death, but he forgot. He forgot me.Where is he going?"

"last time I saw him he was off to find Bellatrix. He knows where she is. she's been hiding out in the Malfoy mansion."

" come on Luna. We're going after him."

"We?"

"Yes, and if not we then me." She said with defiance ringing through her voice.

Hermione grabbed Luna's arm and ran for the Griffindor common room. She quickly said the password, shoved Luna through the door, and jumped in herself to find Neville and Ron sulking by the fire as Loretta, a Griffindor fifth year Ron was dating, was pacing up and down as if she could get through Harry's brain by trodding over a carpet imagining it's his defenses.

"what are you guys doing? you can't just sit around like he's just gone out for a walk. you know just as well as i do that he's just asking for Bellatrix to kill him! and what do you do? you sit there like a bunch of potatoes!" she said infuriated. she felt her throat tighten.

"He's gone. he's not coming back," Neville said.

"that's not true! he's coming back if i have to drag him back by his toes!" she said. the lump in her throat was growing bigger.

"We want to do something, but you know as well as us he's stubborn. we can't do anything! we all thought that he would just lay off of Bellatrix, but he decided to go after her, now six months from when it had happened, and he's in his sixth year now, and-and-and..." Loretta threw her hands up in the air, her lip trembling, not knowing exactly what to do. Ron rushed over to her and wrapped her into his comforting arms. It reminded Hermione of the way Harry had once done that for her.

" I can't believe he's gone!" she sobbed. Serious was dead. she had many people in her life die, but this was the only time she had ever seen it with her own eyes. his face, the coldness that overtook his body, the life dwelling in his eyes just disappearing. She cried even harder. she couldn't believe her only father figure in the wizardng world was gone. she the thought of Harry. Serious was the closest thing that he had to a father.

as if listening to her thoughts, He spoke softly from behind her.

"I'm fine, I'll be okay. He's always going to be in my heart, just like in yours," He said to her. she felt relieved that she could be with someone to grieve with, or just some company. ever since Serious died she ad felt alone in the world. she had no doubt everyone else felt the same. She started to cry even harder. She didn't care who saw her anymore. She turned her face to face him. he wiped the tears from her cheeks gently. He then pulled her into his arms. she all of a sudden felt safer there. she didn't want to leave.

She broke out of her memory. it was now Ron who was speaking to her.

" He's made his decision. we cant do anything to stop him now."

" we can do something!" she said frantically as her voice cracked. She felt the warm salty tears go flowing down her face. " come on! we have to do something!" no one moved. Loretta buried her face into Ron's chest, Neville, now standing next to Luna, continued looking at his feet.

"fine, if you all feel that way, then i guess it's me against the rest." she stormed out of the common room.

"where do you think you're going?" yelled Neville.

"to go find Harry!" she responded.

She was outside the castle. she walked towards the woods. she didn't really know where she was going, she just knew she had to get out somehow.

"how do you plan to get there?" asked Luna, who had followed her out.

" i don't know, i'll find a way!"

"take a thestral" said Luna. as if on queue a thestral appeared out of the forest. Hermione walked quietly and tentatively towards it. it was very gentle, and she could actually see it. She awkwardly mounted onto it's back. Luna helped her get situated and sent her on her way, watching her disappear into the dark night clouds.

She was flying! she never really did like flying, but it was the only way to get to Harry quick enough before he did something stupid. She tentatively looked down at the vast city of London laying under her. She shot her head back up as the thestral gained speed. She knew if she didn't get there soon she was going to be sick and in no shape to knock sense into someone. She saw they were escaping the city lights and were no closer to the country and even closer to the Malfoy mansion. She spotted the house right away. it had an eerie lighting to it and it wreaked of evil. it was dark and cryptic. she closed her eyes tight as the thestral took a nose dive towards the ground and landed softly and silently in the lawn. In haste, she jumped from it's back and ran through the back door as quietly as she could.

Bellaxtrix cackled in amusement. "you boy? kill me? i doubt it! you are simple minded. you are innocent and pure. you don't have the evil drive living within you as i do to make you great. you go against the dark lord and therefore, you are powerless!"

" i have plenty of drive to kill you. you killed my Godfather for God's sake! I am willing to make you suffer and die, or die trying!"

"very well then," she said slyly with a demonic smile playing across her lips. Harry narrowed his stare. she may be older. she may be more experienced, but he was not going to let her get the better of him.

"Crucio!" she said. A pian like no other overwhelmed Harry. He had felt this pain before, but for some reason beyond his or anyone else's understanding,it hurt even worse now. Bellatrix's smile grew wider. she could sense his pain. He cringed as the spell became stronger. He slowly fell to his knees. The pain was almost too much to bear, but he refused to scream. he refused to speak. he would not give her the pleasure of hearing his cies for mercy. He shut his eyes. his breathing became heavy with the pain. He put his hands to his head. he fingered his scar. As if a signal, Bellatrix gained power into her spell. His scar burned, searing with pain. He ducked his head down. He could no longer hold himself up. Against his will, his arms gave out and he fell to the floor. Bellatrix's smile grew wider and wider. She kept her concentration. She relished in the scene set before her. The almighty Harry Potter was curled into fetal position, helpless and decrepit at her feet. She couldn't wait till her master heard of the wonderful deed she had done.

"Harry!" Hermione cried. She ran down the hallway as fast as her legs would take her. Bellatrix whipped her head around to see Hermione running straight at her. She looked at the sixteen year old coming toward her. a glint of fear flashed across her eyes. It left just as quickly as it had come. Her wand wavered.

Harry felt the pain lessen just to be replaced with fear and anger. What was Hermione doing here? no one was supposed to get hurt. it was his fault this had all come about in the first place. Why was she risking her life for him? The pain continued. he was losing his strength quickly. his anger faded. he didn't have enough energy to be mad anymore.

"Expeliarmus!" Hermione yelled frantically, pointing straight at Bellatrix. Bellatrix flew through the air and hit the wall in shock. Her concentration was broken and her consciousness was as well. Hermione ran to where Harry was. He was breathing heavily of relief of the pain being lifted. He just laid there, not having the strength to get up.

Hermione broke out of her state of shock and ran to the spot where Harry lay motionless.

"Harry, oh Harry," she sobbed, " why did you have to be such a moron?" She knelt down next to him and lifted his top half of his body up, gently propping his head up on her knees. She stroked his hair out of his eyes as tears streamed from hers. He ever so slowly sat up to face her.

" I don't want anything to happen to anyone else i love so i went for the problem," he said stubbornly.

"Do you have any idea how much stronger she is than you? you could have been killed!" Hermione said, silent tears running down her face.

"I didn't want anything to happen to you," he siad.

" you can't keep me from getting hurt," she said quietly. she had changed her position to be closer to him.

"I know i left you with very little reason, but you've got to know i could never live with myself if something happened to you or anyone else for that matter,"

"everyone else needs you, I need you. don't think you're a burden because you're not," she rested her forhead on his. she looked down at the floor.

"do you have any idea what Bellatrix could have done to you? You could have died," she whispered.

" It's better me than you," he whispered back to her. She looked up at him. she took his face in her hands and pressed her lips to his. The kiss became deeper. she finally pulled back and held his face in her hands gently.

" if you die, part of me dies with you," she said. she left a shot kiss lingering on his lips.

"Hermione," he said quietly, " i promised you one day that i would die for you."

"Don't you remember what i said,"
she told him, feeling the tears run down her cheeks, "I said you have to live for me too. i can live without you just as much as you can without me." He wiped her tears from her face.he cradled her face in his hands. He gave her a weak smile.

" I'm not dead now," he said in a futile attempt to make her feel better. She fell apart. she fell into his arms.

" You still could have been," she whispered into his chest. he planted a kiss on the top of her head and pressed his cheek to her head as a smile danced ever so slightly across his lips when he noticed hers were doing the same. she pulled back as he stood up. he helped her to her feet. she gave him a smile. She took his hand in hers and they walked out onto the lawn. he helped her up on the thestral and got up after her, wrapping his arms around her waist. she leaned back into them. flying was always better when he was with her. they were smoothly lifted into the air, silently gliding over the countryside.
