Lou Ellen was a flirt.

This fact was apparent to nearly everyone who met her. She viewed it as a sort of game, to flutter her eyelashes, twirl her hair and flash that brilliant smile. She had many boys (and many girls), enraptured by the pure energy she seemed to radiate and the way she could make every person in a room feel as though she was talking to only them. But any hopes that she would follow though on the little promises made by those sparkling eyes were immediately crushed as soon as Miranda Gardiner walked into the room.

Lou Ellen's back would straighten and her attention, which she had previously been captivating the room with, would direct almost entirely onto Miranda. Her eyes, whatever colour they were that day, would focus on the brunette and her smile would automatically become just that little bit brighter. Miranda gave Lou something to focus that gorgeous energy on, and everyone in the room would be able to see it.

Miranda was kind.

She had always been primarily defined as the nice girl who wants the world to be a better place. She was gentle and sweet, and would answer any questions with a smile. She was the girl who your parents would like you to be, or to marry. Her golden brown eyes were filled with warmth, and her chestnut curls were always tumbling down to her shoulders. She was a friend to everyone, from prickly Clarisse, to intelligent Malcolm. She was nice, fair and sweet, but could have come across as a little bit boring, if it hadn't been for Lou Ellen.

Miranda was fair and good, but Lou brought out the leader in her. Miranda was a dreamer who wanted to change the world, but Lou gave her the incentive to do it. Lou gave Miranda confidence and brought out her inner passion for life. The way Miranda held herself, the way she spoke as if she expected everyone to listen to what she had to say, these were influenced by Lou.

No one could ever argue that Lou Ellen and Miranda hadn't been the best thing to ever happen to each other.
