Hi, this is my first oneshot, and a bit of a soppy one!
Forgive me, it's been quite a while since I read the book, but I wanted to do something on it...so enjoy as much as you can!
Thanks x-x-x
Night fell like a curtain over the pink sky, causing it to dull considerably. Zia shuddered and wrapped her arms around herself, trying to think without letting the chill get to her, seep through her skin and freeze her bones.
Beside her, Carter stirred, groaning. Sadie shuddered and trembled against the ground. Both siblings woke slowly, and Zia felt her impatience starting to brew.
"Where...where are we?" Carter was the first to ask. He looked adorably rumpled, his black hair sticking up on all directions, his eyes half-mast. Sadie beside him, rose, more alert and suddenly slapped him over the head.
"Ow!" Carter exclaimed rubbing his head and glaring at his little sister. "What was that for?"
Sadie hit him again, and announced, "we're in Malibu you idiot! Because you decided to go on some hero rescue mission for your girlfriend and we ended up half maimed and unconscious! No offence, Zia."
Zia nodded at her, and turned away. It was true. Carter had risked his life for her, his sister's life. Zia didn't even remember how and why the boy saved her life, just that he did. She didn't even know why her life was in danger, or what she was rescued from. She stood up and tilted her head back, slowly, letting the cold air sweep through her hair.
"You unleashed Apophis." Zia announced quietly.
Carter shook his head. "Wh-what?"
Zia turned around and squinted at the sibling's. Sadie was staring at her, stunned. Carter looked as baffled as his sister.
"You unleashed Apophis. I don't know how, but somewhere in the rescue mission- my rescue mission- you unleashed him from the pyramid. You don't even know me." Zia tried to keep her tone, emotionless and sterile, but she couldn't help but let a tremble slither out in her words. Tears threatened to fill her eyes and she blinked them away.
"Zia." Carter said, upright, now. "You...you don't remember us, at all? You don't remember the quest or Bast, me or Sadie?"
Zia shook her head, looking down. "I...I think it would be best if you left."
Sadie snorted. "Uh...not happening. See, Carter, she doesn't remember."
But Carter was beyond listening. He was staring at Zia, unnervingly. His brown eyes probed hers, searchingly.
Zia couldn't look away. It scared her...and Zia was never scared.
"Sadie's right." He said. "We're not leaving you. We're in this together, Zia."
He extended his hand to her, and looked down at her. His hair looked impossibly dark against the sky, and his eyes seemed to shine. Zia had hardly met anyone with brown eyes that shone. And if she had in the past, she was sure she didn't remember now.
"I want to know what attacked me. Why I needed rescuing." Zia murmured.
Carter blinked, but didn't pull his hand away. "Set's minions attacked you. They were quiet scary, actually, all red and fiery. You were good, though, you fought well."
Zia nodded and prayed that the 'thanks' was conveyed in her eyes. She wished she remembered; remembered the kind boy, with the sweet, warm eyes and hope inducing smile. And his feisty sister who was brushing her clothes off and rolling her eyes at her brother.
Zia looked up at Carter, who still had his hand extended and let a small smile creep up her face. She reached forwards and without more hesitation, she took his hand.
