Kurogane grimaced. He clenched his fist in dull agony, curling his fingers to dig into the flesh of his palms as acidic rain poured from the sky eating away at his flesh. He sat alone, perched high atop the state building of the Tokyo region studying the moon. His crimson gaze was hard, eyeing the celestial lights of the night with hidden agony, loathing the sight of such a peaceful night on such a retched day. His heart's beat was fast, his eyes widening from realization of how real and serious the day's event had been.
Dropping his head and leaning forward to hug his knee's tight against his body Kurogane withheld a wounded cry that threatened to escape his lips. It had only been a few hours since his mage was lost, Fai's life stolen away in an futile effort to preserve what little love survived in the borrowed heart of the Syaoran clone. It however proved to be a hopeless cause, the magicians life lost in vain.
Lifting his head again to view the stars that shone brightly in the sky, Kurogane's mind reeled to understand just everything that had been running through his lovers mind. He couldn't understand what love could drive Fai to sacrifice his own life in order to save a person who had used him, who had ruined his life at such a young age, sent him on a misguided adventure, killed his younger brother, and stolen away from him that which was so precious. Remembering the look on Fai's face as he had held him in his arms, bruised, bleeding, his eye gouged from its socket, the very image of death; A smile. The grin on the mage's face had sent a shiver up the ninja's spin, his sapphire eyes twinkling as he cast his deep gaze on Kurogane, "I guess I didn't win Kuro-rin."
Fai hadn't died right away, Kurogane had managed to retreat with his lover to the comfort of a small room, laying Fai gently on the bed and laying close to his side. His shirt was stained red from the blood that flowed in a seemingly endless stream from the magician's eye, his raven tresses matted from the force of which he had smashed into a group of rocks. But his appearance was nothing compared to Fai's, once golden hair now stained a sickening shade of red; his skin paler than a ghost. Watching as the rise and fall of Fai's chest grew weaker, and knowing time was running out Kurogane leaned forward and nuzzled his face into the nape of the mages neck, ignoring the coppery scent of blood that encased his lover.
He had forgotten how long he had remained there, laying beside the man he loved as he slowly bleed to death, his injuries far beyond any help that could be offered, before he felt the faint squeeze of his hand. Lifting his head Kurogane met the gaze of Fai, who gave him a soft smile as he squeezed the ninja's hand with all his might. "I love you Kuro-rin."
With unusual affection, Kurogane ran his fingers across Fai's cheek before leaning forward and planting a soft kiss on his lips. "I love you too Fai."
Eyes shining brightly at the sound of his name coming from his lover for the first time, Fai gave Kurogane a truly happy smile before drifting off to sleep. Within minutes, with Kurogane still holding his hand, Fai's life slipped away.
Kurogane stood, ripping his gaze away from the moon. His arms were burned, eroded away from the long term exposure to the acid rain. He didn't care though, the burns on his arms were nothing compared to losing his lover. Focusing on a star that shone brightly, outshining all others in the sky Kurogane smiled. This star was Fai, sending him a message from the other side. I may never understand why you made the choices you did today Fai, but there is one thing that I do know for sure...That you loved me and I loved you, and that's all I'll ever need to know.
